Any Beatles fans out there?

Posted by SLS on January 2, 2005, at 12:46:36

Hi.

For Christmas, I decided to treat myself by buying all of the original Beatles albums that are available on CD. What a treat! I should be embarrassed that I didn't do that a long time ago. Anyway, it motivated me to give my website a face lift. I have had a page devoted to The Beatles for about 5 years. It is a basic discography with lyrics. Now, I've added a photo gallery that contains almost 200 images. If anyone is interested in taking a look at it, you can find the introduction page at:

http://home.att.net/~sl.schofield2/beatles/beatles.html

Enjoy.

I'm in the process of watching the Anthology DVD's. They have so much film footage I've never seen before.
The Beatles define my childhood, no mistake about it. When I was little, I'd call pillbugs (the ones that roll up into little balls when disturbed) Yeah Yeah beetles.

I'm a HUGE Beatles fan. They were a major aspect of my growing up in the 60's and 70's. I don't have all their releases on CD, only some. Must've cost you a fortune to buy them all at one time. Do you have any of their bootleg material? I've been downloading some of it off the net. I never knew there was so much of it, far more than their regular albums.

BTW, love your site. Where did you get all the photos from?

I wish I had the Anthology DVDs. What other Beatles DVDs do you own? Sadly, I have none. :(

I've been renting the Anthology discs from Netflix. You can keep them to watch for as long as you want before sending them back. I only own one CD, Sgt Pepper's, that I bought when I visited Liverpool. Eventually I hope to start buying the other albums, but I'm pretty cheap when you get down to it :)

There are only about 12 original UK realeases on CD. They were on sale for $9.99 at Circuit City. I decided to take advantage of it.

No.

Are you using any special software to locate and download music? I recently got a hold of their yearly Christmas messages from a website. I'll see if I can find it.

> BTW, love your site. Where did you get all the photos from?

I can' take credit for taking any of the photos. :-) I surfed the net for a few days to come up with them. I am very grateful to everyone who took the time to scan the pictures and post them.

The Beatles were also a big part of my childhood. I remember watching A Hard Days Night when it first came out. I was only four years old, but I begged my parents to take me to see the movie at the local drive-in. Now, in the midst of a severe depression that has deprived me of an adulthood, it is very comforting to return to those things I identified with most in childhood and adolescence. Fortunately, the music of the 60's and 70's was a true renaissance that we were priveleged to experience.

By the way, if you look at the downloads page linked to my homepage, you can download a rather complete collection of their songs in MIDI format. It's towards the bottom.

Do you live in the UK? Just wondered why you bought the UK releases and not the US releases, which are not the same. Good price though but I wouldn't have the money to do it. I'm glad you could take advantage of it though. :)

I'm sure you could use any downloading software. I personally use Kazaa Lite. I also like WINMX. They're very easy to find. You can find an entire album as one file and then I found the program online to d/l, that will unwrap it into individual songs.

Thanks for the link but I already have all the Christmas stuff downloaded. I didn't know that link existed actually. If you have found any other cool links, I would appreciate you sending them along if you don't mind. :)

You have some photos that I've never seen before and I've done plenty of looking. lol!!!

Seems you are a few years younger than me but I won't hold that against you :) since you like the same music as me. lol!!! I don't think that there is any era in music that compares to the 60's and 70's and nobody but nobody will ever outdo the phenomenon that The Beatles were and still are.

I saw the link on your site for all the midis. Very very cool indeed!!!

BTW, do you listen to the Beatle's individual works or just them as a group? I love Paul McCartney's music and John Lennon's. I was never really much into George or Ringo. gasp!!! lol!!!

> Do you live in the UK?

Nope.

> Just wondered why you bought the UK releases and not the US releases,

It is the UK releases that made their way onto compact disk. The other thing is that a few of the US releases were actually compilations of songs drawn from the original UK releases. The UK releases represent more accurately the chronology and evolution of The Beatles. For instance, "Hey Jude" (The Beatles Again) contains both "Hey Jude" and "She Love You". The Beatles never went into the studio to record an album named "Hey Jude".

Thanks for the info on music downloading. I wish I had a high-speed collection, but alas, I am limited to dial-up.

Take care.

Ok, I know I have a LOT to learn about the Beatles, but why would "She Loves You" be on the same release as "Hey Jude", wasn't SLY a VERY early song for them? And wasn't Hey Jude (the album) originally supposed to be "Get Back"? I also didn't know that "Hey Jude" was really called "Hey Jude (The Beatles Again)", does it actually say that on the CD?

I agree with your comments re: chronological history of The Beatles releases. My CDs are all Canadian Capitol releases.

Yep, don't know what I would do without my cable modem. I'm not very good with patience. lol!!!

I was mistaken (a relatively common event) regarding the album "Hey Jude". "She Loves You" was not one of the older songs they chose for it.

The album "Hey Jude" was hastily put together and released in an effort to raise money for the Apple label. It included some earlier stuff to take up space and bring the playing time up to 33 minutes. I think it was a pretty tacky thing to do. It was concieved to be a sort of compilation of songs not appearing on any US Capital albums. Unfortunately, they left out too many hits to have justified this claim. The album was to be named "The Beatles Again" but was changed at the last minute.

1. Can't Buy Me Love
2. I Should Have Known Better
3. Paperback Writer

There was a project called "Get Back", but I don't remember very much about it. It's too bad that The Beatles chose Phil Spector to produce the "Let It Be" album. He ruined it by overlaying the original recordings with orchestral and choral dubs. I think this was what inspired Paul to produce "Let It Be... Naked" recently. I would love to hear it.

For more great information, see:

It's one of the best sites out there.

I think "Let it Be" is one of the most moving and inspirational songs ever written.

I love the Beatles too. I especially love John Lennon's work. I have just about everything he did after the Beatles broke up. I think Paul did some brilliant work during the Beatles but I'm not wild about his work post-Beatles other than "Maybe I'm Amazed." George did some incredible work too. I loved "All Things Must Pass".

I feel the same way you do about hearing the music of my youth. It definitely brings me back to happier, more hopeful times. That can be bittersweet though.

My apologies. You're right. I was thinking of the Let It Be release when mentioning it Get Back. I didn't know that bit of info you mentioned on the Hey Jude release. Thanks for supplying that. Thanks also for the link. It does appear to be a very good site. I downloaded the Let It Be Naked CD but it's been awhile since I've listened to it that I can't make any opinions of it. Why did you not buy it at the same time as all the others?

I'm not Scott, but I wanted to say that listening to the Beatles, certainly brings me back to a time of my life where I was the happiest, well almost. Let's just say, it could've been, minus a couple of childhood traumas during that time.

I think a lot of people feel that way. The music was so good and the times were so hopeful - not to mention that we were younger and had more hope ourselves. I'm sorry you had to have that time marred by traumas.

I guess I needed to cut-off my spending at some point. I was trying to save money so that I could buy a new pair of speakers to replace those that I have been using since 1973! I like Polk Audio.

I think it was a much more peaceful era, our generation was all about love. There was much more innocence then.

As far as my childhood traumas, the first one I was able to block out at that time because it had happened many years prior to that, but I was not so fortunate to be able to block out the 2nd as it happened during the latter part of The Beatles era. I had blocked it from my memory years later but both have come back to haunt me for the last several years now. There is always something that will trigger the memories; thus leaving me to relive them over and over again.

Yeah. In my opinion, they are just about the best there is for medium-high priced speakers. They are known for producing very accurate and uncolored sound. I went for it and bought a pair. I am very happy with them so far.

Maybe I'll pick it up at some point.

I converted my whole Beatles collection to MP3 and managed to fit it all on a single CD. MP3 is really amazing. I created one CD with all of the albums in chronological order. I created a second CD where all of the songs are placed in alphabetical order. The neat thing about this compilation is that when played, it produces a balanced mix of songs from all of their periods in a seemingly random fashion. I think my downstairs neighbor is having Beatles nightmares.
