Ten minute session

Posted by Dinah on April 16, 2008, at 19:41:30

I'm so annoyed with myself. I should have canceled. I had several items work I needed to finish today, and I had very little time to do it. So when he called and said he'd be fifteen minutes late, I decided to do some of them. But instead of getting there fifteen minutes late, by the time I found parking and everything it was 45 minutes late.

So I basically drove a half hour or more each way to hand him his check in person.

I'm such an idiot.

Nor did I finish the work. :(

One of those live and learn moments. I would have called and said the time is short and I don't think we should have our session today. But that didn't happen so now you have to deal with what did happen.

This isn't what you needed and how can he take your check?
I'm sorry Dinah. It is a huge disappointment for you.

I hate when that happens!! For me, it is so frustrating ... I think I would have screamed once back in my car.

Have you even wanted a day-do-over?

I'm so glad it's not just me!

I've hardly ever been late even.

Once I had the times wrong, and he called me to ask where I was. He said he'd see me next time and I got really upset and asked if I couldn't see him for what time remained. He didn't realize how early I left for sessions and that I was halfway there. Even that time I ended up with twenty minutes.

Other than that I've never been any more than ten or twelve minutes late, if I couldn't fine a place to park or something.

I think if I had suggested that I really should get another fifteen minutes, because he was fifteen minutes late anyway, he'd have given it to me. But I needed to get back to work so I handed him his check at the regular time.

It was entirely my fault, so I can see why he'd charge me. He has a strict day before cancellation policy.

That's so frustrating. Once I was half an hour late because of the weather, and my T gave me about ten minutes extra (she had another client waiting), but I still felt hurt and rejected.

Hope you get there on time next time :(

Hi Dinah,

I was once 40 minutes late, so I know where you're coming from. My T worries if I'm more than a few minutes late because she's afraid I've gotten into an accident which really makes me feel guilty. I'd rather sit in the parking lot for 10 minutes then be 10 minutes late.

I've just been making the sort of decisions a frazzled overwhelmed person generally makes.

Sigh.

Last Friday I basically sad and cried my eyes out for the entire session. And it was remarkably effective. Wailing is not something I generally do, but every once in a while...

That French analyst whose name I have quite forgotten (the one who talked about 'the gaze': I could never understand a thing he wrote) kept cutting down the length of his sessions.

I'm not sure if he ever got to the point of just having people mail in the cheques, but that would have saved you the trouble of driving.

Lacan! It must be the blueberries.

His lucky clients!

I think in some ways it might be healthy on my part.

Several times lately I forgot to bring his check in. Tuesday I was forty minutes late. And today I forgot his telephone number.

Surely added together this might be significant.

Dinah, cut yourself some slack. You are just having one of those weeks we all have. And maybe there is something subconsciously going on but dont' sweat it. I finally told my therapist I was having a hard time because I started being late. He realized it of course but it did help to talk about it.

And a good cry is sometimes very cleansing. Take it easy on yourself. You have a busy life too just like he does!

But that 10 minute appt does bite the bullet. Ouch on the pocket book too. Sorry for that it might have been just as effective to throw that check out the window. Sometimes that is what I feel like doing. For all I feel I get:( But then you have those good sessions.

Hopefully next week's sessions will be back on track.

My therapist is often up to an hour late seeing me. I've gotten conditioned to being seen late. Yet, I fear my being late and worry if I am 10 minutes behind. However, he sees me just the same for a good amount of time no matter which one of us is late, no matter why. I think this is probably good but often frustrating when I don't know when he'll be seeing me. Widget

We had a huge blowup once because he never starts before ten after and his sessions generally run from ten after to the hour. Yet when I was late for the first time in eight years or so, he stopped the session at ten till, as if he would have started the session on time. I don't think he'd do that again.

But in general if he's late we run late. If I'm late he ends on time (or at the latest what is usually on time based on when he usually starts).
