SAMe experiences, Ron Hill, Larry H, others?

Posted by Jakeman on March 6, 2006, at 19:22:33

I've decided to try SAMe again. A while back there were some positive posts by Ron Hill and others. I've tried it before for a couple months and got a great anti-depressant effect, but it did not last. This time I'm combining it with 20 mg celexa, b12, folate, fish oil, C and good multi-vit. I've read that the stuff on the market now is better than a few years ago. I've also thought about adding in lithium orotate. I would appreciate any comments one way or the other.

warm regards, Jake

Hi Jake
It works but can make you irritable and aggravate insomnia. I finally stopped it (after a couple of years) and found I could sleep better, especially if I keep my drinking in line. I used to take 400mg in the morning. It made my wife irritable, obviously so. I used LEF brand.

Hi Declan,

Thanks for the feedback. It's really too early for me to comment, but today I've felt better than I have in months...I know that can change quickly. And I'll see how I sleep tonight. I was motivated to try SAMe again after seeing a study suggesting that it augmented SSRI's. When I tried it before it was without an AD. I may use the: on again/off again approach like they recommend for stuff like Mucuna. Especially since many people have reported problems (irritability etc) after a few weeks or months. But I was so glad to have some energy today, my mind has been a stick in the mud.

warm regards ~Jake

Hi Jake
What's the lithium orotate? Is that different to lithium carbonate? Is that the form you read about in alternative publications talkin about the value of low dose lithium supplementation?

Hi, y'all,

I've been on about 800 mg for about a month, now. It seems to be helping--along with the several other things that I'm doing. Gave me a bit of insomnia at the beginning, but that went away after a couple of weeks. Now, it seems to be staving off the depression. I'm not completely there, but it's helping quite a lot.

Haven't noticed any side effects aside from that initial insomnia.

Hi Declan,

Lithium orotate is supposedly a "natural" form of lithium carbonate. Several months ago someone posted a thread asking people to participate in the Lithium Orotate Project. There's a lot of information at this website:

I did a short, low dose trial a while back using the Advanced Research brand. I couldn't tell anything. But I thought if the SAMe makes me manic or causes sleep disturbances I may give it another try.

This discussion reminds me of a town in Georgia called Lithium Springs. The local springs contained lithium and in the old days it became a resort/healing center where people would drink and bathe in the springs. These days the water from those springs is bottled and sold on the retail market along with other bottled water.

I'm still gettin a good anti-depressant response. I noticed some sleep disturbance, so today I took same-e only in the morning.
