I want to start over

Posted by Deneb on March 5, 2006, at 18:29:52

I want to be like Poet, a PBC virgin.

Can I start over?

I plan on never getting a PBC or block again. Can someone be my sponsor or something? Can this someone Babblemail me everyday to say, "Remember to be civil Deneb!"

Can I have a ceremony to mark this fresh start? ;-)

hi Deneb,

I get wanting to start over though, and I think you're welcome here whether you start over or just continue from where you are. :)

But I think we've been over this many times before, though. Only *you* can take responsibility for your posts! It's not anyone else's job to email and remind you to be civil - it's your job to do that.

As for a ceremony...how about giving yourself a goal, and celebrating when you meet it? Just a suggestion!

Do you think I can do it myself then? Do you really think so?

> As for a ceremony...how about giving yourself a goal, and celebrating when you meet it? Just a suggestion!

OK, if I can remain PBC and block free until BabbleFest, I will give myself a helium balloon.

But first...I have to wipe my slate clean.

From this day forward, I declare that my PBC slate and block slate be wiped completely. (in my mind only of course, but I wish Dr. Bob could wipe it clean as well. :-( )

(Magical transformation taking place....)

!!!!!!!!!

Now I am a PBC virgin again! (in my mind of course)

Treat me like a PBC virgin! This is really important to me.

In fact, I'm going to change my name over this...

Darn it, I can't add characters to my name. I was going to add an asterisk or something to my name, but I can't.

Oh well. I'm a new Deneb though...the new PBC free Deneb.

Yes. Zero doubt in my mind. You're a chemist, so get with the program. ;-)

LOL, I wouldn't consider myself a chemist at all. Shhhhh! I really suck at chemistry, especially organic chem. I'm more of a biologist. ;-)

I'm not so sure about that, missy.

Singlet, or doublet?

Let's keep things simple....doublet. LOL I'm "radical" aren't I? ROFL

Anyways, back to my new start.

I'm the new Deneb, Deneb*, who's going to remain PBC and block free from now on.

But then you'd be Deneb·

Deneb* is excited.

I was thinking the * could be the electron.

I told you I wasn't a chemist. :-P I don't even completely remember what a singlet, doublet or triplet is right now!

Okay, let's just say Deneb is like chlorophyll and I've just absorbed some photons. LOL

Let's not get started on resonance here. LOL

Deneb* (the asterisk means I'm the new Deneb who is *very* careful to check for triggers and uncivil things)

Okay, enough of this, I gotta go study for real! Or else I won't even know what an electron is. LOL JK, off to study some animal physiology.

It's not standard symbols, though. Deneb dot is the radical Deneb. The * designates an electron bumped up into a higher state by a photon. Deneb + photon --> Deneb*

> I told you I wasn't a chemist. :-P

Piffle. You just needed a refresher.

> I don't even completely remember what a singlet, doublet or triplet is right now!

Orbital degeneracy.

> Okay, let's just say Deneb is like chlorophyll and I've just absorbed some photons. LOL

See! You knew it was a photon. You're playing games with me.

> Let's not get started on resonance here. LOL

That's quite another thing entirely. Are you a carboxylate anion?

> Deneb* (the asterisk means I'm the new Deneb who is *very* careful to check for triggers and uncivil things)

That's fine with me! :-)

> Okay, enough of this, I gotta go study for real! Or else I won't even know what an electron is.

If you know what an electron is, you won't know where it is, though.

> LOL JK, off to study some animal physiology.

That's always useful information to absorb.

I agree, people ultimately are responsible for themselves, but at the same time I'd like them to feel free to ask for help here, and I think it's great when others do help them.

Yes, many people here are very generous with their time and help, and it's great that they are.

I just think it's important not to confuse "asking for assistance" with "attempting to completely offload responsibility and asking someone else to be the gatekeeper for one's own actions." (Even if it's asked in a sort of lighthearted way, I think it can still imply that there is something deeper to it.)

I worry that somebody might try to take it on, and would only disappoint themselves and the asker, because it's an impossible task.

I also think it's a good idea for people not to ask for more help than could reasonably be offered by an internet buddy, because it sets them up for disappointment when it can't be given. :)

But I definitely wasn't trying to say that nobody should ask for help, or give it. Just that some kinds of help just can't be provided.

I agree. It's important to clarify what's being asked for and what's being offered...

I have offered to be a civility buddy for a couple people before...

In both cases I made sure to talk about my limits.

- I can't guarantee a response within a couple days

(because I don't know what might be going on in my life / with my computer access)

So... That is a limit I have.

I think it is important to be fairly clear with limits so there aren't expectations that one cannot meet. Also... It is part of taking care of yourself.

sorry... above not just for dr bob... (nm)

I'm not doing that. I just wanted someone to help me out when I start getting out of hand and don't realize it. Just a reminder, like, "remember triggers, remember be civil".

My asterisk method

Posted by Deneb on March 8, 2006, at 13:55:26

In reply to Re: responsibility, posted by Deneb on March 8, 2006, at 13:22:15

Hi people,

I just wanted to tell you the method I'm using to make sure I don't post uncivil things and post triggering material without providing a trigger warning.

After every post I write, no matter what the content, before I click "submit" I read it over to look for incivilities. Then I click "submit" and read it over again to check for triggers and incivilities. Then I add an asterisk to my name and click submit and quickly scan once more before publishing the post.

I do this for *every single post* now, no matter what the content, even if it is a simple one liner.

I plan on never getting blocked again.

I think you are doing a good job with posting. And that is very awesome how you are re reading and scanning first. Me, I know this sounds silly but I am so paranoid about getting blocked or PBC'd I read and re-read several times (OCD) before I post. My poor brain. Anyways. I think this is awesome what you are doing and how you are doing this through your own methodology.
Take care ok.
