Nortriptyline and weight gain??

Posted by Laney on October 27, 2010, at 11:56:56

Looking for others' experiences with this. Never had weight gain in 13 plus years of paxil but ever since adding Nort. I've gained like 15 lbs.

Thanks!

Laney

Hi Laney from what I know and boy not much the TCA's are known for weight gain. I don't know what you can do about it. I wish I did. But it's working right? Does the feeling good outweight the weight gain? Only you can answer that. Good luck with responses. Love Phillipa

Phillipa,

I did much better than the other three things I tried (Wellbutrin, Zoloft and Lamictal) but I never got complete relief either. I thought about the weight gain vs. partial relief and think there's got to be something that can maybe give me a much better outcome mood wise and not affect my weight. I mean if I knew the weight gain would stop at some point, I might say ok, but who knows? I wasn't on all that much and still gained a lot - for me.

Thanks again,

Laney

Are you taking Zoloft and Nortriptyline? If so, how are you feeling?

Unfortunately weight gain with Nortriptyline is just the nature of the beast. I would try to eat a well balanced diet with plenty of good vegetables and a little fruit, exercise 5 times a week(moderate to intense exercise), and add good fats like Omega 3s and extra virgin coconut oil.

Raw apple cider vinegar may increase insulin sensitivity, possibly helping to fight weight gain.
Resveratrol also increases insulin sensitivity through AMPK activation-also activated during exercise.
Fish oil increases insulin sensitivity and helps process fats better
Green tea has been shown to help with weight loss

I'm combing paxil and nortriptyline. My mood when at like 50mg. Nort. with 20mg. paxil is pretty good except it doesn't feel completely natural if you know what I mean. Also, I get a little to excitable, etc. Feels like an adrenalin rush.

I was hoping to feel a natural Up feeling without the intense adrenalin feeling.

Thanks so much for the suggestions. I appreciate it.

Maybe the unnatural feeling subsides with time and you begin to feel more natural. I also imagine moderate exercise followed by a meditative stretch would help eliminate some of the effects that noradrenaline is having on you.

So you are taking 50 Nortiptyline? If you feel a significant improvement, try to feel lucky there is any improvement at all. Be patient and hopefully the unwanted effects will gradually diminish with time.

I've been on Nortrip. since October and I have gained 40 pounds. I am slowly weaning myself off.

How long have you been taking it?

My first suggestion would be to keep the meds like they are and start exercising regularly. Five times a week would be great of course, but three times should do the job too ;-)..
If there is no improvement in both mood and weight gain to the point where you are satisfied, *then* I would change the meds. Exercising can really help with both of these issues, and it would take less time to see whether that is a solution than to drop a med and start another one.

good luck!!

Hi Laney,

Unfortunately, nortriptyline causes weight gain frequently.

Thats really weird, no weight gain on paxil. Usually its a big weight gainer.
TCAs can be weight gainers. The only one Id think would be light on that is desipramine.
