Alprazolam (Xanax) only lasts 2 hours, im serious it wears off so quick its like i just got slapped by anxiety back.
Very unconfortable. But it also is a VERY nice calming medication.

Have you tried a longer acting benzo like Klonopin, Valium or even Ativan?

Been on Both Ativan and Klonopin over a period of 4 years for anxiety. Klonopin made me depressed, very, i thought i was just in zone land. Ativan i went up to 6mg and still it didnt help.
Xanax (Alprazolam) is very helpful, but sometimes it makes me mellowed out. When i was on Clonazepam i was had an additude, 1mg made me mean, which this is so irronic that benzo's can change you personality. But alprazolam is ok. I call it the "Peace" medication. When i cannot calm down it helps.
My doctor wanted me to try Phenobarbital to wean off, i said "no". I have heard many times phenobarbital is very depressing.
Im ok with it right now.

xanax works well for me in very small doses throughout the day
have to keep the dosage low
it doesn'y chill me as much as i would like but any higher dosage just makes me sleepy

Some people metabolize certain drugs faster than others. Xanax is metabolized by the liver enzyme CYP3A4. Maybe your CYP3A4 is just naturally overactive and chewing up the xanax faster than normal. Just a wild thought.
You could try multiple dosing, like maybe 4 to 6 times per day, or whatever. Just do whatever schedule fits you.
You could also try grapefruit juice with it. Grapefruit juice is an inhibitor of CYP3A4. Drink a glass of grapefruit juice and see if the xanax lasts longer.
I'm glad you have found something that you like fairly well. Probably all that is needed is to finetune the dosing schedule to fit your particular chemistry.
