Looking for help here .... My friend Paul has lost his job and lost his home. He was staying with his brother recently, but his brother "threw him out" on Memorial Day. Paul called me and could barely talk for the weeping. He is living in the woods (at least water and fire wood are plentiful), but everything seems particularly bleak and difficult due to his having lost his Paxil and being without for probably seven days or so. Because he is a Vietnam vet, I suggested he contact the VA to find out about temporary housing and/or to get his Rx renewed. I don't know if he'll be functional enough to make that contact .... Does anyone know about detoxing off of Paxil? Any other suggestions? 1100 miles away and worried. Thanks, Temmie

OMG - I hate to put the fear of G-d in you but he has GOT to get his Paxil, and SOON. I was on it for many years until it pooped out and this was just before it became known that Paxil has one of the WORST reps of the SSRI's for bad, severe withdrawal. So, my pdoc at that time had given me a VERY rapid weaning schedule (heck, it was almost cold turkey) and I became sick as a dog, mostly with the most intense nausea I have ever experienced. I was sooooooooo nauseous yet could not get the *relief* from actually barfing. I would also break into cold sweats and could not sleep. I don't mean to scare you; sorry if I have; I don't know if there's anything you can do since you are so far away from your friend, but urge him to get to a VA hospital ASAP. Good luck.

Paxil cold turkey can be rough. Doctors often have plenty of samples of drugs like Paxil, if it would be an option for your friend to see a dr. My pharmacy will usually give me a few days supply of a non-controlled med if the doctors office doesn't call back with a refill authorization. And ADs with longer half-lifes, like Prozac, are sometimes used to help withdraw from the shorter half-life ones like Paxil.
I wish I had more to offer. I hope things turn out ok for your friend.

An idiot pdoc had me go off Paxil cold turkey (I reported him to the insurance company). I had dizzy-woozy spells, problems walking in a straight line, felt all foggy. Basically like I was doped-up. This is a bad situation for your friend if he's by himself in the woods! If he can't get to a VA hospital he might want to consider a regular one - it will depend on how bad he was before the Paxil.
I wish Paul lots of luck - I can't imagine going through Paxil withdrawal without a home and family support. :(
