Ethereal Boogie-Woogie Blast
Gabriel blew a blue note
Of purest too-cool soul,
An ethereal boogie-woogie blast
Of heavenly rock-and-roll.
Jimmy the Weasel knew enough
To put his life on hold,
Just stood, his tongue stuck fast
Upon life’s frozen metal pole.
Saw that flipping on the Crips had been
A fool’s gold kind of bold,
And the nine-millimeter messenger
Left its message in a hole
Of red-tinted punctuation, a period,
The end of his story told.
God said, “Hi, c’mon in, Jim,
I’ve just made a Jell-O mold.”

Atticus, you are a very deep well.
Refreshing and abundant.
May I share it with my student Salvador as I did "Dig It"?

Of course. Anytime, Malthus. The main thing any poet wants is to be read. Will your student know what a Jell-O mold is and why the idea of God making one to greet new arrivals is humorous? Jell-O molds aren't exactly part of urban hip-hop culture. In fact, it's a Jell-O mold's sheer unhipness that led me to that ending. But then, you'd expect God to be very, very, very old skool, wouldn't you? :) Atticus

if at all possible, your work gets even better.
you are at a new intensity, a different intensity...
it's rich and full.
I can hear Angel Gabriel blowing his horn.
the blood vessels in his eyes popping.
man can you play that thing

Thanks so much, Jai. This whole poem arose from me overhearing someone say "cool soul" as she passed me in a corridor at work while conversing with someone else. I fell in love with the phrase, and composed this poem based on the idea of just wanted to build on it. The whole construction was a bit like an oyster building a pearl around a grain of sand. I knew I'd have "cool soul" on the brain until I gave the description a home in verse. I still have no idea what the hallway conversation was about, but then that's neither here nor there -- "cool soul" means something else now. Ta. ;) Atticus
