my eyes open
I can see the big dipper
my eyes open again
the room is close and hot
how many hours
eyes open
shut
light on
off
I roll onto my side
head filled with a melatonin & ambien cocktail
a car motor racing under my pillow
the metallic purr takes flight
someone it being airlifted
I count my blessing
then sheep
then the heart breath
I open my eyes
the night has slipped past
only to return

oh my goodness, we are having a Nor'easter.
snow flakes the size of my fist and sparkling like jewels.
It's bitter cold...
wind chill 25below zero tonight.
The snow is going to continue till tomorrow....
maybe 10 to 12 inches.
The wind will pick up.
I always worry about the homeless when the air is so chilled I can't stand being out for a few minutes.
Our apartment temperature is at around 75 degrees....
I always pump it up in case we loose power.
my best to you
Jai Narayan

Jai, I am so glad you are still around. Haven't been seeing much of you lately.
I can't believe how cold it gets over there. Really. I can't comprehend it.

God, this is an all-too-familiar scenario. I've gotten to point at times when the two most dreaded times of day were going to bed (knowing I wouldn't sleep) and getting up in the dark and cold for work (having not slept). You captured this scenario, and the sense of being caught in an endless cycle of meaningless despair, all too well. ;) Atticus

I am having endless and frustrating sleep issues and very often lie in bed trying very to be patient and fall asleep but lying awake for hours and hours.
Your poem is beautifully written and touches my lack of sleep nerves.
