endless night

my eyes open
I can see the big dipper
my eyes open again
the room is close and hot
how many hours
eyes open
shut
light on
off
I roll onto my side
head filled with a melatonin & ambien cocktail
a car motor racing under my pillow
the metallic purr takes flight
someone it being airlifted
I count my blessing
then sheep
then the heart breath
I open my eyes
the night has slipped past
only to return
