Going stir crazy

Posted by Dinah on November 14, 2013, at 16:48:31

I can't drive until they do a procedure on my inner ear that they can't do until I can quickly roll on the shoulder near my broken arm.

I hope it's not too much longer.

Add "no driving" to the Argh!! List. Better to keep your balance, though. I know this is a delicate thing.
Take care,

I had hip surgery in July and couldn't drive for six weeks. Or walk more than a few blocks. I think the only thing that kept me sane was streaming various TV series from Netflix or on-demand. I watched all of Breaking Bad, Homeland, four seasons of Dexter.

I took fourteen books out of the library and read them all.

How long will that be? Any idea. Stinks for sure but can't be dizzy to drive. Phillipa

Why do you have to be able to roll onto your shoulder first?

Sorry to hear you are going crazy... TV is a point... I have just started Season 3 of Dexter and fairly surprised to find myself enjoying the series quite a bit. I found Mad Men pretty good, too. Breaking Bad.

Music, too. Something I would like to have more exposure to is classical music. Realizing I'm loving electronic dance-type music for the lack of lyrics. That I find something... Stimulating but not attention grabbing about it. Have discovered a Concert Radio Station that I'm enjoying a great deal. Have even been doing a little focused listening of music that I thought I'd heard before - but realizing now that I've never properly listened to most of it.

My current favorite (a real mixed bag)

BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix of the year 2012, Nicolas Jaar:

You kind of want to put it on and ignore it for the first 4 minutes...

Hope you feel better soon. I enjoy Nashville and Blue Bloods.

I love Blue Bloods! Although I admit to letting them stack up in my Tivo and watching them in a marathon watching.

The family dinners make me feel all warm and cozy inside - even when they argue. It must be nice to have family like that.

I'm glad you have found something that helps! I like listening to audiobooks. Things like Jeeves and Wooster or The No 1 Ladies Detective Agency or Georgette Heyer or Brother Cadfael. Nothing too dramatic.

My hearing tested better than he would have expected. Of course, it was tested in a sound proof booth. I can hear noises fine. What I have trouble doing is understanding words - especially in a noisy environment. People just as well be moving their lips only. I am wondering if too much headphone listening has made my ear lazy.

The Epley maneuver to unseat the little crystal that causes Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo involves a rollover from the affected ear to the other side, unfortunately the side that I can't lie on. I see the bone guy on Monday and will ask. After that, I wear a cervical collar for a few days, and if all is well and they can't provoke the vertigo after that, they'll probably tell me I can drive.

I guess it would be easier if I actually felt dizzy. But I have felt fine for a couple of weeks until yesterday when they provoked the vertigo to prove the diagnosis.

Still, I'm hopeful that soon they will tell me that I can do the maneuver. It's got a very high success rate and I've never had BPPV before so it may not recur at all. I hope not.

At any rate, I felt much better after hearing that even though I wasn't in bed when it happened, I had just gotten up. It happens much more frequently in bed because lying on one side for a length of time can let the little crystals work their way into the wrong spot. So I'm not likely to just fall to the floor randomly throughout the day even if it does recur. It also might help if I keep my high caffeine and salt intake lower, he said. So that gives me a bit more feeling of control.

Fortunately I'm able to work from home. I'm not at my peak of efficiency. Not least because without my usual routine, I lose track of time and date. Plus it's difficult to type and I get tired easily. But my arm is getting better every day, and it's getting easier to type.

I definitely want to drive only if I can do it safely. Especially since what I miss most is picking my son up from school. I don't have that much longer to do it, and it's the only time I have a prayer of having him really talk to me.

But as wonderful as my husband is being, he's tense from all the added work he's having to do. Including having to drive me everywhere and do all the driving of my son, and working from home because he's afraid I'll fall. He gets tense and that makes me tense. He's such a high energy person, and I'm not, and it can be exhausting for both of us. There has been the occasional snapping at each other on both sides.

Fortunately he seems to feel a bit more confident after learning for sure what was wrong. He let me feed the dogs last night even though it involved bending and stooping. As he sees that I don't keel over, maybe he'll be ok with my doing more. And I'll be able to do more with my arm soon, I'm sure. Heavens I want to cook. I don't even dare suggest anything that involves chopping vegetables, and many of my favorite foods involve chopping vegetables. :)

Hi Dinah,

I would hate not being able to drive as my car is still a place I hide from the world.

I'm with everyone who suggested reading books or watching Dexter or another series you didn't catch the first time around.

I hope your eye and arm issues heal soon and you'll be behind the wheel or like me hiding during my lunch hour to escape from temp hell.
