Boxer from puppy mill

Posted by fayeroe on April 19, 2009, at 11:58:53

I got a call about a Boxer who was rescued from a puppy mill. She is three and has had puppies every time she went into heat.

The rescue organization want to know if I will take her. They know that Fayeroe was half Boxer. She only has about 3 years to live......:-(

I saw her photograph and she is brindle and so sad looking.

I don't know if I can deal with three years. And I wasn't thinking about getting another dog this soon.

Manic, I really am scared about the three years. But, I am 66 and I don't know about getting a baby. I want a puppy but it worries me that something will happen and my daughters might have to take the dog.

The rescue people will pay all of her medical bills.

I just don't knowwwwww.

baby im 61 now an would not hesitate to have a puppy, they will keep you alive an well, i tell you i just sold 5 an like i said if you had been near i would have given you one, when my last bitch pup left for her new home it broke my heart as i had bonded with her , but i have 2 bitch,s now an 1 is only 2 an three would be to many , but i have pups with my bitchs an when the 2 year old has her last litter say in 4 years i will keep one.pups bite your feet , rip your carpit, an bite your woodwork . but it is the most wonderful feeling when they love an bond with you, you are there mum an nothing beats that feeling with a pup, now are you tempted????????????

Are you comfortable in saying why she only has three years? Is that definite? Could it be sooner?

I've taken in dogs with medical problems before. And aside from cost, I've never regretted it. It's really hard going into it knowing that all you can do is make what time she has as special as possible. But if you can draw that line in the sand for yourself, what could be more fulfilling than helping give a dog the best three years of her life?

I would check to make really sure they've temperament checked her though. Some of those puppy mill breeders are kept in awful conditions and are undersocialized. Some dogs never do regain the ability to bond, some end up as fear biters, and some have other temperament problems. Health problems are plenty enough to hurdle. If she has attachment problems, three years may not be enough time to overcome that.

The advantage of rescue groups, though, is that they usually do temperament check.

The veterinarian is the person who put the three years on her. Who knows? With love and good care, she might have more than that. I can't remember how old she is now. I'll ask.

I would like to help her, Dinah. The rescue people aren't going to be able to keep her forever there. I know that her temperament would be good. The rescue organizer told me that she was a happy dog.

She sleeps with the organizer's cats and loves children. One of the volunteer has a baby and then there are two more in grade school and she has loved on all of them. I have the cats and grandchildren.

The group will pay all of her medical bills. She has been spayed, flea treated and her shots are all up to date.

Thank you for your input.

You're welcome. We got our little princess knowing she wouldn't live long, and we've never ever regretted it. She's lived a lot longer than expected and seems to be holding steady. Sometimes the things that touch our life so fleetingly leave a special mark on our hearts.

Pat,

it is my observation that you already have a special place for her in your heart. I say go for it. She needs a good home. And you're the best!
