My husband is on a differant message board. The question there was do you require or ask people to take off there shoes before coming inside your house? Interesting to compare answeres. I have another one will post. Love Phillipa

I ask all guests to take of their shoes. I have carpeting. If they need them, I'll give them slippers.
It's something I picked up living abroad. Seems rediculous to worry about bacteria all over the place, and then put our shoes up on the coffeetable.

Good grief no. Their feet may be worse than their shoes. And what if they have an unattractive toe fungus and aren't wearing opaque socks? That might make them feel uncomfortable.
Now, if I had *disposable* socks and slippers, I might suggest it.
(Sorry, there was this whole big article on toenail fungus lately in the newspaper.)

I don't ask them to, but if they volunteer I really appreciate it. What I really hate is when people just trot right in without wiping their feet on the doormat. My husband does that to annoy me. Argh.

No. I just ask them to wipe their feet so that they do not bring crap from other sources into my house.
Take care,

I don't require it but I prefer it. I always take off shoes in my house and the sound of shoes clomping on the wood floors really bothers me. Maybe I should have an assortment of slippers laid out at the entryway.

A friend of mine had new white carpet in his condo. For Christmas he gave us each a pair of slippers--big Disney character's feet slippers. :) We kept them at his condo. In fact, I think he still has mine.
We didn't mind respecting his desire to keep his carpet clean, even if we thought choosing that color was unwise. I always tried to remember to wear slip on shoes when visiting, though.

Everyone up here seems to take off their shoes before going inside. It's just what's done!

Bare feet are worse for carpet than shoes - the oils from the skin are impossible to get out.
My house? I don't care one way or the other. I'm gradually getting rid of all the carpet anyway.

Of course, we also don't have carpets. :)
One galumphing through the house after a rain is enough to forget all about slippers or carpets.

Well he's following a thread on HTV tv. It's a big argument. Some say that they like to sit on the floor and dont want shoes to have been there, others say depends on the part of the country you live in, some don't care, He's reading it now and says the thread is so long it's incredible. Love Phillipa ps my husband said he will send me the link and I'll post it.

um, I'm really the odd one out here.
I never would dream of asking anyone to take off their shoes. I know one person who does. She and I do not get on-- not that it has anything to do with that.
I would be rather put out if someone asked me to. Really unhappy.
I'm very attached to my shoes. In fact, I wouldn't feel comfortable at all without my shoes (boots)-- I'd totally off my game. Out of my comfort zone. At a loss.
My boots are really important to my self-image. Wow. I had no idea taking off your shoes was such a wide=spread thing.

Gosh, I didn't realize there were so many people I wouldn't be visiting!
I'm sure they're all very very lovely people. I can only be friends with people who don't have powder blue carpets, though.

Yeah everyone in Finland takes their shoes off before going inside.....its just the total norm, so even if you're a guest in someone's house, you just take your shoes off automatically.
The opposite is true in the UK however....its much more individual with the shoes off thing. I think most people in the UK don't bother to take their shoes off, particulary when visiting other people.... which is slightly gross IMHO.
And I don't think it rude to ask a guest to take their shoes off....people have asked me loads of times.Just thought I'd add an European perspective!
This is the end of the thread.
