Away for a Week/Good News from son in BC

Posted by Kath on August 5, 2006, at 0:06:00

My husband & I are going to a rented cottage tomorrow (Sat).

Going to Barrow's Bay on the Bruce Peninsula in Ontario.

We do a lot of hiking on the Bruce Trail. I'm looking forward to it & now the weather has cooled down, thank goodness.

Heard from my son yesterday. He said he'd been doing his "needle sweep" (his job cleaning the streets of dirty needles with the street 'outreach' group) & someone from behind him called, "Hey - is your name -----?" & my son turned around & here it was his really good friend, Dave, from when he was in BC when he was about 17! So meanwhile, Dave has his own company restoring high-rise concrete buildings. He hired my son, who called me yesterday, after his second day on the job. He is really enthusiastic & said he worked really hard & wanted to prove himself. He gets $10/hr to start & works 6 days a week. That's good, because it'll keep him busy & occupied while he's in the first part of not using chemicals. It's been a month now. He had been rather worried about the next couple of months. Dave told him that he was pleased with his work & that there's plenty of room for advancement. I am cautiously optimistic. My counsellor says it's really important for me to keep on an even keel; particularly when I'm speaking to my son, but just in general ABOUT my son.

So that's nice news for me & makes me feel more positive & thankful & relaxed to go away for a holiday!

:-) Will post when I get back.

:-) Kath

My kids are so much better than I was, although this may not be true for you :)
It's nice to hear this. There is a high casualty rate among young men your son's age.

I'm glad it's cooled down for your hiking trip. Have a great time!

I'm glad your son is settling in well. I hope it goes well for him. I'm even gladder you're maintaining that Detachment.

I'm so o glad to hear, Kath, that your son reconnected with this friend, who seems solid, and has found a more secure footing, especally a job.

Staying grounded about him-- trying to have faith that over time things can improve, even if there are rocky times, too-- but just having faith, and letting it be-- it's hard, I know, especially with a child -- but you'll probably do the best for him, as well as yourself and your family, that way.

I checked pictures of Bruce Trail last night on google-- a great place to spend a week. So many different scenes-- and interesting local settings. Farms, too- there was a photo of a few pigs--very close-up, kind of funny, unexpected.

I'm going to Vermont for a few days soon, and I'm looking forward to seeing the woods, sky, just absence of tall cement and glass buildings, no cars on the winding roads. And doing some hiking.

Hope you have a great time--getting away from worries, and into the pleasure of experiencing and exploring and relaxing.

Jost

Oh my kids are worse than me!!!! LOL
My daughter (30) is great now, but her teens & early 20's were harrowing.

And hopefully my son is doing something of a turn-around, but OH BOY he's been worse than I ever could imagine being! But I love him dearly!

I think the worst stuff I did consisted of:
- spending my Mom's money to buy weed once
- getting drunk & leaving wine bottles in a co-worker's fishing hut when he let a friend & I use it one winter day

Jeez - sounds like my life was pretty boring eh?

Hope you're well. :-) Kath

Hi - thanks for your good thoughts.

Dinah - I'm having a bit of trouble not with detachment as much, but in the past, sometimes things seemed to be promising & something bad would happen.

I am having a hard time with feeling a bit of dread - like "what's going to happen to ruin things". I do NOT like thinking like this! I try to shift my thinking away from negative & fear-based thinking.

Some COOOOOL things on holidays... » Jost

***********yes, I'm really glad they met up. I can't help but feel that the "Universe" is putting some positive stuff out my son's way & I even said to my son that he did something positive towards changing his life, so it looks like the Universe is doing something also. Just the fact that Dave was there & happened to see my son, then recognize him is pretty "coincidental".***********

*****You're absolutely right, of course!! It is hard though. Right now I'm struggling with not getting scared that something bad is going to ruin things! sigh. BUT I'm shifting gears when I think that. It's important for me to have faith that things will get better & to RELAAAAX about it; take a deep breath; smile & be calm. But you're right about it's best for my son AND me AND my family!!!***

********Yes - there are lots of farms LOL - didn't see any pigs though! Mostly cows, but we did see what might have been alpacas on the way home, but south of the Bruce Peninsula.

The coolest places we saw were Greig's Scenic Caves on "Scenic Cave Road". SO amazing - some were as huge as a barn!!! The whole walk took about an hour. You walked down some steep stairs & followed along the base of high cliffs. There were numerous caves of various sizes. Some years ago, the movie, "Quest for Fire" was made at these caves. It was apparently an arty-type movie with no words about cave-man type people. My husband saw it. We're going to get it again now that we've seen the caves. $6/person - what a deal!

Little Cove - amazing rocky shore with "flowerpots" & wonderful rock structures you can climb among. It's right on the Bruce Trail - a wonderful trail that goes from Niagara Falls through southern Ontario & up to Tobermorey at the tip of the Bruce Peninsula.

Half Log Dump - a cobble beach with huge rock formations & cliffs, etc. As far as you can see in either direction there are cliffs, trees, rock shores, turquoise & deep blue clear waters. My friend, who spent a few days with us said it reminded her of Hawaii. This is also on the Bruce Trail.

On the way in to Half Log Dump, I made my husband stop the car to look at a dead snake at the side of the road. It was a dead Massasauga Rattlesnake. It's head was crushed (unfortunately for it) so I wasn't scared to go close to look at it. It had about 8 rattles, so was 8 years old. The WEIRDEST, freakiest thing was that its body was moving - slowly back & forth; like from side to side!!!!! It was decidedly dead. I had heard last year from a man who stopped to look at a dead rattler about a time he worked with Lands & Forests of something like that. One day there was a dead rattler. They pushed it to the side of the path. A couple of days later he thought he should move it & had time, so he went & picked it up by the tail. It whipped around his wrist!!!!!! He said he actually had to go home & change his pants!!!!!!!! It was dead but he said that the heat from the sun can affect the nerves. I wondered if that was what was happening with "my" dead snake this year. It was pretty weird. What a beautiful snake!!! Such pretty colours & so lovely. I felt pretty sad that it had been run over.*********

*******I hope you had a great time. One thing I really like about this type of holiday is the peacefulness. Today, before we left for home, my husband & I went a little ways onto one part of the Bruce Trail & found a lovely meadow. We take light, easy-to-carry chairs & our books in a knapsack most times we hike....we sat in this meadow & you could SOAK UP the peace & quietness!! ***********

****It was exactly like that!!!!!!! Hope yours was also Jost. :-) Kath*****
