Wikipedia is such a great resource. I really hate to see people start vandalizing it like that. It's especially disturbing that someone in the media would encourage large numbers of people to vandalize it.

Plus I think he's missing the point. People can dispute articles on Wikipedia and make corrections. So false entries should eventually get corrected-- if enough honest & well-meaning writers participate. Sure some jokers can ruin it. That's the tradeoff of having it be an open document.

It just makes me sad, because to me it's one of the really great things on the internet, yet I think it will probably be vandalized more and more in the future.

I don't think he's the one who's missing the point.

I don't understand why what he did is supposed to be so charmingly irreverent and freaking brilliant. All he ended up doing was showing that Wikipedia ended up correcting itself.
I would think that most people would check sources other than Wikipedia before stating something as fact. It's no different in that regard than anything else you read. Big revelation...thanks Stephen

>>Yeah, I'd much rather have that risk than some of the "facts" we were taught in school that are forever left in print.
Things like.. the native people of Canada were scalping savages.

Yup they really taught us that, and I so wish those books were open documents. Or the fuel for a bonfire.

I took it as an extension of the concept of "truthiness." "Truthiness" is Colbert's right-wing alter-ego's gold standard for belief. "Wikireality" is the reality one might manipulate in order to shape truthiness.

I don't think he intended it as a commentary on Wikipedia, but on the tendency of many in the public eye to deliberately defy facts in order to maintain certain illusions.

If I ever use Wikipedia as a resource for research, I always check it against multiple other sources.

I would do this with any source though...I think it's just smart to do.

Well, I'd like to think that. He's a genius, and I love the guy. He did say though that he wanted to show that if something is repeated often enough it's considered to be true.
True enough, but I was really surprised that he of all people picked Wikipedia when there are so many more blatant examples, peer reviewed Journal articles being but one, and one far less likely to be corrected in a reasonable amount of time.

Stephen Colbert is such a smart guy, with a very incisive wit. I really admire his show.

On the Wikipedia, his point might have been that lots of people (myself included, actually) didn't know that the information there isn't fact-checked.

Or, at least, not completely, and not until after-the-fact. Certainly, there might be pages that no one challenges, or the challenge process could take time, and some things spread very quickly, esp. online.

So I'll be more careful about what I quote from there, now, although I'm pretty sure much of it is reliable.

This hasn't been his best week. Possibly summer burn-out (or brown-out-- many of which, unannounced, have afflicted this whole city recently).
