Amazing talent..check this out!

Child prodigy...and a true miracle...IMO.

Anyone heard of her before? My SIL's mom always sends me great, uplifting websites, and this one is certainly that!

Yes, I saw an interview with her on the news. Absolutely amazing. Her work is absolutely amazing :-)

The sad thing is though, these kids don't get a chance to just be 'kids'...grow up way too fast, and often end up becoming addicts, in trouble with the law, etc.... and the rest of their lives are ruined. Look what happens to many child actors. Let kids be kids...because growing 'up' really sucks, man.

IMHO,
Jay

Her talent is amazing, but, like Jay, I also wonder if she's had to be time to play and be a kid. I hope so, such an incredible child. I homeschooled our two older kids, so I know they can be kids, have lots of friends, and just live their lives, BUT I think some kids don't get that. She's obviously beyond her years in a lot of respects.

I feel like a heretic saying this, but I really hated her paintings. To me they are too technically perfect and they remind me of a Japanese animation / Heavy Metal magazine hybrid.
On the website they mentioned that her painting of Jesus matched the measurments of the shroud of Turin perfectly, that sounds like circus advertising to me.

I don't dislike these things on principle, I did see the work of another 10 year old impressionist artist and I thought it was incredible, and I could see her child spirit in it. I truly don't want to offend anyone, I hope I didn't, art is so personal.

Mmm.
I've been known to do a pretty awesome paint by numbers myself ;-)
I think...
A lot of pressure comes from people thinking you are a 'genius'. A lot of pressure.
From family, the media, the general public.
Most people who really are brilliant in one respect are ordinary - or usually even lacking in other respects. You kind of have to be to put so much into one little area of your life, I guess.

She is a kid.

But yeah, I guess the hype will make her grow up pretty quick.

A mixed blessing...

she does have a gift that developed early. I'm impressed that she can do this at such a young age.

The art isn't my style though; I wouldn't choose to decorate my home with it. Some of the poetry shows promise - I would like to see what she writes in another 10 or 15 years! (Or maybe even 5!)

Do you think some people blossom early and stagnate? Will this girl continue to develop, or is she "done" and this is the best her art will be?

If the artist were a 45-yr-old, would we be as impressed? If you didn't know how old the artist was, would you still like the art?

For me, those are the kinds of questions I like to think about. I think that I would not be impressed if the artist were older. Obviously there is a talent here, but I wouldn't consider this "great" art. It kind of reminds me of those velvet Elvis paintings that you can buy on the boardwalk.

But I know that sounds petty and mean, and I DO admire this girl. She IS talented, and I bet she's very interesting. It's just that even though the art is better than I could draw, and matches the skill of a person 20-40 years older, I still don't really like it.

Is that mean to say?
What do you think?

That's exactly the description I used when I wrote to a friend, or I thought, something you'd have seen airbrushed on the side of a van in the '80's.

Another thing that makes me wonder.. If, as she said God sent her a model for her Jesus painting, I wonder why he didn't send someone who at least *looks* like they're from the Middle East.

Apologies

I sincerely apologize. Nothing I said was necessary to point out here. I don't think anyone is heartbroken over my opinion, but still, it's not as if it was asked for, and I don't think anyone is being hurt by admiring her, there was no reason for me to post those things.

Gabbi,

That was so very gracious and selfless of you to post...but...entirely unnecessary,IMO.

First, I hope you don't feel you must wait for someone to specifically ask for your opinion, especially on this board. I value your opinion all the time, on every board, solicited or not. And really, the way I started this, I was inviting opinions anyway, wasn't I?

Reminds me of something...another poster recently wondered on Admin if those here who sincerely try to follow DB's civility guidelines (the best we are able to understand them) were a bunch of "drones" (lol - I maybe guilty as charged, there, I suppose...)Anyway....point is, if I thought posters might just agree this art was good, amazing, or anything positive, and just write that...well, maybe I'd be LOOKING for a bunch of drones! No, thank you. I prefer diverse, opinionated, smart, free-thinkers like Babblers!

So Ms. gabbi, I gently reject your apology because I can't find anything for you to be sorry for!

I haven't had time to respond to everyone separately 'cause I've just been busy and/or lazy and/or tired...(that's too many *and/ors* !)but...

I found all comments to be thought-provoking, and leading me to examine why I had such a gushing reaction in the first place. Still working that one out.

Her art really does look like velvet paintings and "van art."

I guess I like *some* velvet paintings and *some* van art. Wouldn't fill my house with them, but might hang just one I really felt drawn to....

I do worry about child prodigies and such. Hopefully, her parents and others are being mindful of the pitfalls every day. The irony - particularly in light of her religious beliefs - if she were to suffer and lose the precious childhood I think God delights in us enjoying - would be huge. (that was one horrid sentence - sorry)

I'll have to look through the website more - I just clicked really quickly and, not being able to draw a straight line or even a circle that's not egg-shaped, was startled and impressed by the stuff done when she was so young - 7, etc.

I don't care for the poetry at all, actually. Just doesn't do anything for me. Like you (?) said, art is so personal, and so is poetry, I think.

Anyway, gotta run, but I wanted to suggest you give yourself a break - no regrets for anything written that I can see - 'kay? :-)

Thank you so much Tenderheart. I really really appreciated that. I just thought about it afterward, (Like you've mentioned about yourself I'm always trying to understand, and rethink my actions, and other peoples) And I thought, If that art, or article made someone feel really good, and it's not hurting anyone, why do I feel I have to say everything I feel about it? especially if it might be a downer for someone?" So I felt bad.
I was even going to write to my "civility
buddy" to see what she thought, not about technical "Babble civility" but whether or not it was a rude thing to do.
I'm glad you didn't think it was rude of me. I don't think I would have felt bad if I was in your position either, I actually laugh a lot when people point out those types of things, and often I think "hey, you know you're right"
I guess it's individual, but now I know you're okay with it, and that's very important
to me.
Thank you.

I'm sorry this is so long, I just *cannot* think straight today, I feel like I'm trying to work my thoughts through molasses.

I saw this girl on a talk show. She spoke like a little professor when discussing her pictures and the symbolism in them. I also agree that her work is fairly conventional when compared to works of older established artists but I think what she does at age 10 is quite incredible. Who knows what she'll be capable of 30+ years from now.

I also think that sometimes young kids are pushed too hard and it can really damage them in many ways - the most obvious being that they miss their childhoods entirely. But some of these geniuses really need to follow their passions and would rather do that than anything else. Maybe it's cruel to not let them indulge their interests as much as they'd like.

I agree with that, definitely. Allowing a child the freedom to be who they are is, I think, the greatest gift you can give them. I think it's hypocritical, or at least contradictory really to say they need the freedom to be a "child" when that implies a preconcieved definition of what a child is, and that's not freedom. They deserve the freedom to be who they are. I've met children who have no interest in
what most consider to be kid stuff.
We never really know from the outside whether or not a child is being pushed beyond their limits.
