which do you prefer..white or yellow cake?

Posted by alesta on December 5, 2004, at 5:06:07

i am going to be wrestling with this earth-shattering decision. just curious, that is, if anyone has any feelings about the matter. i'd thought i'd bring it to this field of experts (amature chefs and food lovers) for evaluation.

It depends on what I am doing with it and the icing I intend to use. But to eat, I prefer yellow.

Food is my business, it's what I do for a living! And one of the things I do is make cakes.

Alesta, if that's the only difference, then why would anyone choose white unless they HAD to?

because it *tastes* different. (but i'm not sure what the difference is recipewise between the two.)

OK. Yellow with chocolate frosting (nm)

hi again susan,:)
this conversation had me really confused last night (i had been up a long time w/out sleep); i wasn't quite sure what you were saying, so sorry about that. i checked on the internet. i think white cake uses whole eggs while yellow cake uses just the yokes.:)

Yellow Cake????!

Yellow cake????? Ha ha ha, no way - you guys have yellow cake! I have heard that Americans like their cheese coloured a particularly vile shade of yellow too!

I have never had yellow cake.
But my real question is why oh why would anyone want to eat anything else when there is always CHOCOLATE CAKE with CREAM CHEESE ICING?

oh! we have another reply. lovely.

but..chocolate cake, no less..oh dear..will...not...compute...
you see chocolate cake is just not an acceptable or palatable choice. i'm afraid there will be a penalty for this preference...NO SOUP FOR YOU!

ami

p.s. preciate your funny reply alex!
p.p.s. hope you've seen that seinfeld episode where you're from..:)

>NO SOUP FOR YOU!

If it is yellow - then thanks, but I'll pass!

Haven't watched much Seinfeld. Preferred Fraser and Dr Katz myself..

I think that the yellow colouring is a bit odd. Is your icecream yellow too? It is like 'hey I'm yellow, so I must be dairy!' For some reason chinese bakeries over here tend to colour the pastry yellow. Not really sure why. It is odd to me, though. Like how Watties put out a green tomato sauce. (Tomato sauce goes on everything, its like catsup.)

But it looked too strange for my liking...

hi alexandra! :)

> If it is yellow - then thanks, but I'll pass!

then i guess i'll be putting you down for white. :-)

> Haven't watched much Seinfeld.

me either. actually, hope i don't offend anyone, lol, i'm not a big seinfeld fan. i can't stand the show anymore. i liked it when it first came out, but it got old quick. i don't know why i threw that line in. another thread on the site reminded me of it...a cheap finish to my attempt at a return volley. and seinfeld strikes me as so bloody smug!

> I think that the yellow colouring is a bit odd. Is your icecream yellow too?

lol, well french vanilla is kind of yellow, but other than that no. well, then again, there are so many ice cream flavors over here. you can find just about any flavor you can dream of.

<For some reason chinese bakeries over here tend to colour the pastry yellow.

now that's just nasty!

that is weird! i don't get they why would want to make it green. geross.

where are you from, alexandra? the UK?

Well, actually lifelong Manhattanites like myself ARE bloody smug. We kind of look at the rest of the country as a quaint province. Just the way it goes. There are some other cities I love in the U.S., especially New Orleans (most "European" city in America that I've encountered) and San Francisco. And overseas, I'd really enjoy seeing Tokyo some day -- if I win the lottery. From what I've heard from friends who've been there, it's a bit like NYC on crystal meth. And I love the trippy pop culture. Atticus

Hmmm. Never thought of it before, but Americans DO seem to have an affinity for foods with yellow tints. Guess it's like crows being drawn to shiny objects or something. Actually, the most off-putting cake I've ever seen is a concoction called "red velvet cake." Regular chocolate icing, but when you cut into it, you discover that the cake itself has been dyed a deep crimson with food coloring. Makes you feel like you're slicing open a fresh carcass and eating it raw. Took me totally by surprise the first time I ran into it at a dinner party. I expect it's from Hannibal Lector's recipe book ("Tell me about your favorite dessert, Clarice ...") And it isn't the least bit velvety to boot. Is this an American creation? (Sure seems like it would be.) Or have you heard of it? Atticus

Can you get hokey pokey flavoured ice cream?

> that is weird! i don't get they why would want to make it green. geross.

I think that they thought that kids would like it. But it tasted funny to me. Not because it tasted any different really, but the colour put me off.

I am from New Zealand. Hokey Pokey icecream is a Kiwi creation so I am wondering whether it has hit the States yet. It is vanilla flavoured (I guess, or maybe slightly toffee or something) with little round lumps of hokey pokey. Not like the inside of a crunchie bar, though, just little hard lumps you crunch with your teeth. It is pretty good :-)

hi atticus

a quaint province aye? humph! :)

well, in your defense, at least you have an excuse being part of a collective cultural snobbery, as you pointed out. :-) seinfeld..well, there's no excuse for him. :) kidding! love you seinfeld!!! sorry, just had to do a shout out to my boy.

anyway, i appreciate your summary of the locations you enjoyed/want to see. i haven't traveled much around the U.S. i've been to the UK, though. and was born in hawaii. no i'm not hawaiian - my dad was in the military (before he went into the fbi).

tokyo does sound cool. now i want to go!

you are a true hippie, atticus. a wonderful hippie. we need to find a time portal and send you back a few decades!

Ew, I shall try to remember to avoid that one!
I have never heard of it.

I loved "Silence of the Lambs". Then there were two more... I liked the one where he was in Paris the best. Completely cool, calm, and collected. Classy even :-)

I think Borderlines are supposed to admire sociopaths :-)

Never can manage cool, calm, and collected myself.
I am good at hysteria though :-)
