Yeah, it is, because if the public demanded it, the networks would carry it. I just feel like this president has had such serious, DIRECT impact on the lives of Americans, that we'd want to know what he's up to. His policy decisions have impacted our pocketbooks, and sent off people's brothers and sisters and spouses and kids to war.
I know that all the news shows are carrying sound bites today, but it's different to actually *listen* to the speech and *feel* what the tone is, if he's trying to hide something, or if he's sincere.
I mean, he mispronounced Abu Ghraib prison. Is that one of his regular word mangling incidents, or was it done on PURPOSE to further distance himself from the treatment of prisoners there?
Plus, I wanted to see if that bike accident really screwed up his face. :-)

Ugh, he did mangle that word, hugely. But he did manage to avoid smirking until the very end. But I can't stand his near-whistling "s"'s. Sssshibilance...sh.
And it seems like his speech writers have figured out that less alliteration is better.
But still, ugh!

I honestly cannot stand the way the entire Bush family men speak. George, Jeb, and George Dubbya all have a way of making my stomach lurch, no matter what the message is. I can't explain it, but it's a visceral response like leaping into the air when I see a snake.
Hmmm i think that analogy came from a Freudian part of my brain....

Its probably the West TX accent you're hearing. People talk differently depending on what part of the state they're in. I've noticed alot of people do the 's' lisp thing too. Its kind of a country thing. West and East TX tend to be more country and cattle and open spaces. Central and South are more metropolitan. I think in any state that has that kind of diversity, there will be different ways of speaking. You would think though, that someone in the political eye would try to at least use proper pronounciation and grammer. And for the record, I flinch every time he says "terra" instead of "terror".

That's another one of those that makes me shudder. Come on Bush! Don't make us look like hillbillies or something!
Another one that bothers me is 'yellow'. My whole family pronounces it 'yella'. It always irritated me though, so I say it correctly. Pretty much anyone in a professional environment will use the correct pronounciations. It really just depends on how self aware you are. I took a voice and diction class in college and it really opened my eyes.
But in the south's defense, there are words that are mispronounced up north too, its just more acceptable for some reason.

I think the accent is affected. He did after all come from privilege, go to the best schools and all.
I have been told I don't have a Texas accent, but I sure can put one on when visiting foreign countries like New York.

I think our own regional accents probably bother us the worst. Bush's accent, per se, doesn't really bother me, but as a DC area native, when people around here say
WARSH-ington or WARSH the carIt drives me nuts!

I mean that with his advantages growing up I don't see how this could be his natural way of speaking. His wife and mother certainly don't speak like that and I doubt it is the vernacular at Yale. So, yes, I believe that the males of the family, consciously or unconsciously, have determined that the accent makes them sound more reachable.

I wouldn't doubt that one bit. Like he's trying to be a 'good old boy' or something. Whatever, he's rich, privileged, and in politics, so I don't trust him. There is no telling how much goes on in the world that we as the general public will never know about. It'll be in history books someday.

Rich, in politics, etc. Certainly I wouldn't trust him either.
As much as I'd like to see him go, I have to admit he is an amusing, bandy legged little f###er.
It cracked me up that he went on and on about what a good governor he was while he was running. I even had folks from out of state ask me if it was true. Of course it's true (grin) 'cause in our wonderful distrustful state the guv has no power!
