I looked into Scientology quite a few years ago when a friend who was using it told me that it would help me.
As far as I remember, the point behind Scientology is to change one's engrams so that they are correct, after which one becomes 'clear'. If Scientology were completely correct, when one finally is 'clear', meaning healthy, no bad engrams, one doesn't need psyciatry, psychology, or anything else, really. Since the brain controls the mind, when the mind is perfectly healthy, the body should be so too.
Of course the medical profession is necessary because there are still random things like car accidents, germs, etc. which can assault the body.
If I remember correctly, Scientology also believes in past lives, and the engrams do live on, and we could be experiencing things that are the result of what might have happened in past lives.
In the end, I will pick science over Scientology. I appreciate L. Ron Hubbard as a fine author, but I can't trust my mind to him. I like Tom Cruise, but don't look to him to tell me who is qualified to help me get well.
Still, one should decide for one's own self. Scientology, though very new, is still followed by quite a few adherents. They have a large presence on the web, and you can learn a great deal about them here: http://www.scientology.org/
Some people view scientology as one of the leading new-age religions, and their clean-and-polished appearance makes them much more popular than most of the neo-pagan followers.
I hope this helps.

If I am not mistaken, Scientologists eskew ALL types of outside medical treatment. My understanding (and I may very well be wrong) is that they believe that it is the will of God to heal you or not, and the interference of man shows a disregard for the the "will of God".

That is the First Church of Christ, Scientist, or the Christian Scientists.
There is an interesting tale of Mark Twain breaking, I think it was a leg, and the only 'medical' help available was a Christian Scientist healer. Well, the leg was never repaired, and when Mark arrived at home, he began to receive requests for payment. He wrote back complaining that he hadn't been healed. Soon arrived another letter saying that the healing was spiritual. He responded saying that he had then paid in spirit. I believe he received no further requests for payment.

There is a little book, I think the title is "The Wit and Wisdom of Mark Twain" that contains many interesting such things. I don't remember if that story is in it, but it's a very fun book.
I also like many of the lines from the movie "The Princess Bride". One of my favorites that is transferable into one's daily life is "Truly, you have a dizzying intellect". There have been SO many people in my life to whom I would have loved to say that.
I guess that you just have to keep your eyes and ears open.
