> I have major depression plus overuse of sleeping pills and after the holidays, I would like to check myself into a treatment center to get this under control. But it means taking a leave of absence from my work. I am a registered nurse but do phone triage, do not work with patients. And my depression or sleeping pill use has never interfered with my giving excellent patient care. Am I covered under Americans With Disablity Act or would I lose my job if they knew what was happening. I hate to lie but I know I need the treatment. Thanks

Hi,
> I would like to check myself into a treatment center to get this under control.
<<Way to go! That's a huge first step! Very proud of you. :-)>>Am I covered under Americans With Disablity Act or would I lose my job if they knew what was happening. I hate to lie but I know I need the treatment. Thanks
<<I don't know where you live, but large businesses have Employee Assistance Programs that help employees with counseling and substance abuse. In general, if you seek help there, it's not (supposedly) held against you. Can you ask your human resources/personnel people about that? That type of conversation is supposed to remain confidential.I would like to think a health care facility would be open-minded about something like that. See what HR says and take it from there.
Good luck, and I wish you the best,
Susan

Ditto on the info from Susan.
I have found my employer to be very supportive with myself and others regarding mental health issues. This has included substance abuse isssues that I have known some co-workers to have dealt with.
EAP is a good start.
Normally, Nursing Boards do not become involved unless you are found to be "impaired" in patient care (endangerment, etc..), diverting meds, and other really "big deal" issues... even then, there are programs in place to allow you to seek treatment and get well.
As a R.N. --- if you don't take care of yourself, you certainly can't take care of others.
Nurses get sick, too.
Best of Luck to you,
Kelly
