Does anybody else ever go to bed and wake up feeling even more exhausted than before they fell asleep? I never feel completely rested and can't figure out why.

Hi Elle,
Certain meds can cause that, as well as something like sleep apnea which could be detected by a study like Dinah suggested. And I'm sure you know depression can greatly interfere with the sleep cycle.I've struggled with insomnia all of my life, although I think you're talking about something different. I get that too, where I wake up tired and it feels like no amount of sleep is enough. A good night's sleep is highly under-rated; everything is easier to deal with when you're well rested.
Sweet dreams,
Kara

Hi Kara lynne,
I have insomnia too, but on the rare occasion when I do rest, I wake up feeling unrested. I think your right though, it is due to the meds. Like, for example, I fell asleep tonight at around 11 pm and I woke back up at 4:30am...Can't get back to sleep. I had taken a Klonopin earlier, so I could sleep without interruptions, but I know I have awoken several times during my last period of sleep... Sorry if this is garbled, I'm exhausted! -Elle

I hate when that happens. You look at the clock and see a number like 4:30am and groan, hoping it isn't really happening. This morning I slept late and had to make myself get out of bed. I felt like I didn't have anything to get out of bed for, but that's a different thread.

Sometimes if I can't think of a reason to get out of bed...then I don't. But, I always get up to feed the cats, they keep me going. Bless you.

I'm currently struggling with the same thing right now. I'm mentally and physically exhausted but can't sleep. Once I fall asleep, I can't stay asleep. I've been experimenting with OTC sleep remedies. If I find something that works, I'll let you know.

Thanks! I would really appreciate knowing what works, so I can try it. The problem is really frustrating because I sleep and sleep, but feel like I only got in two hours of rest. Hmm...could be all my medications, but I can't quit taking them. I know I'm Bipolar III, the kind that acts up only when I take certain anti-depressants. Right now I'm on Paxil, and I am noticing an increased eneregy on very low amounts of sleep. Could mean the a-d is working, or could be my BP3...ahhh!!!

Dear Elle,
Cats are good for that--sometimes mine is the only reason I get up too. And sometimes if I'm really morose, she'll pester me--I swear she knows and just won't stand for it--until I get up and start at least to minimally function. They're no dummies.
Bless you too, Elle.

Hehe, my cats are like rabid animals when they haven't had their breakfast. One in particular plays (awfully rough...hehe) with my feet until I get out of bed and feed the troops. Plus, if I don't get up and feed them, I start doing a mental guilt trip on myself (get out of bed you lazy, uncaring thing and feed your babies), which makes me awake anyway. Bless you.
