How to deal with a dinasour doctor??

Posted by NikkiT2 on November 25, 2002, at 10:04:18

I went along to two mental Health Conferences last week. One of the new Personality Disorder Bill going through Parlimant (oops, should say I'm in UK!) and another PD conference pon friday.

Anyway, there was a Proffessor who spoke at both.

On wednesday's one, in front of "service users" (ie, those with a PD) he said "peopl with Borderline Personality Disorder are just vampires sucking everything out of the system"

On fridays he said similar things covering all PD's.. such as they're all prickly hedgehogs who no one can help, are all drama queens etc etc.

This really upset a friend of mine who is still feleing rough because of it.

Now, I want to really complain about this bloke. I have searche dthe net, found the University he is associated with, even his phone number and email address!!

BUT... am worried that by complaining I will just be living up to his "needy and whinging" stereotype. Someone at the conference stood up and challenged him, and he basiclaly said "see, that proves my point".

How can I say something about it, without seeming like I am "acting out"??!!

I can't believe he said these things at a conference!!!

You've really got to admire a guy who sets it up so that his ideas can never be challenged.

Perhaps in your complaint you should stay away from emotional appeals such as how much these comments hurt and instead try to attack it on other grounds. How opinions like that guarantee that treatment won't be effective or something along those lines. Or perhaps that comments about vampires and hedgehogs are just his own personal emotional reactions and that they make rational discussion difficult.

Good luck.

Hi Nikki,

If you are able to pull back, I wouldn't put the time into writing directly to this guy. He obviously thrives on this controversy. It sounds like he's practiced playing his game, so that he can easily use a complaint as an opportunity to demean you even further.

Although I would imagine that his affiliated university already knows about his point of view, if you have one of his inappropriate quotes in writing, you might send off a letter to their psychiatry department. You also might want to research if he gets any grants for research on PD; if so cc a copy to the funding source.

As a past prolific angry letter writer, I have finally learned to evaluate whether a letter could realistically have *any* impact. If it might, go for it. If not, you might be better off just letting it go and not allowing this "bloke" any more of your time and attention. (Often times, I find it cathartic to write the letter, but wait a while before deciding to send it. More often than not, recently, I decide not to put it through the mail (e-mail or otherwise).

Sorry you had to listen to this guy insult you and your friend,

Shelli

Thanks for that you two.. think I will leave it a few days, and try and see if there is any write up of the conferences that mention his comments. the one on wednesday should be transcribed as it was with the Department of health.

Its not how I feel that matters to me... I'm not too bad at delaing with comments like this, but other people took them personally.

I do work for a charity for Borderline Personality Disorder in the UK, and was at these conferences as part of them, BorderlineUK (quick plug.. www.borderlineUK.co.uk - its still in the building stage, but considering everyone working on it has BPD I think we're doing great!!).

I just worry baout up and ocming Pdocs who might actually be influenced by this man!!!

I think I would concentrate on your concern that he doesn't seem to be current with the latest research on BPD, and that such a lack of training does not reflect well on his employers.

Geesh.

I can't find NikkiT2's post, but she was talking about Dinosaur Doctors, so I came up with a new name for them.

Whoa !

Do your research, find where he teaches and contact this dept head (Dean) and the president
of the Uni. The fact that he said this is bad enough, but to an audience of "service users"
is even worse.

Craft you letter well, tell what happened and how it made you feel, but avoid histronics or excessiveness. This act is so wrong. This Dr does
not sound compassionate, he is more like an accountant, complaining about spending.
I would think any respectable school would
not want a member speaking so poorly about
fellow humans in need.

Hi Nikki - sounds like extremely good suggestions from Shelli. I am totally astonished that "in these days" a professional(?) person could spout such total nonsense!!!!!!!!!!

Seems to me, he has some pretty big "issues" & isn't tremendously healthy himself!

luv ya Nik. PS - hope your friend can consider throwing this garbage into the garbage pail, where it belongs, instead of giving it a place in her own head. xoxoxo K
