Is Wellbutrin SR suppossed to get you arrested?

Posted by Lini on July 14, 2002, at 21:10:34

The situation:
Okay, driving back on I-95 tonight, I get off at my exit which is directly across from the shopping plaza which contains the grocery store and pharmacy that I use. However, there is construction workers, machines and orange cones, everywhere blocking the entrance (they are apparently paving the roads).

My initial reaction:

Well god damn it, how the hell am I suppossed to pull into the parking lot? I need cat food, something chocolate and bottled water.

The drama:

After nearly getting into two accidents trying to manauever a very badly designed traffic plan (signs are pointing the wrong way, the construction trucks themselves are blocking the route) and getting wrong directions three times for the back entrance to the shopping plaza (driving around for 20 minutes, remember, the plaza was directly across the street!) Meanwhile it has gotten dark, the store closes in ten minutes and instead of using over head lights to see what they are doing, the construction workers are using their truck headlights, and basically blinding motorists trying to navigate.

The question:
I pull up to a police officer and basically lose my shit, telling him that this is the WORST situation I have ever seen an intersection be in, that I want his badge number and the name of the person in charge of this little escapade (sprinkle in some swear words for good measure) and it suddenly dawns on me that I could be on my way to the back of a police car like those characters on the show COPS. I drive off in a big huff like a crazy person, finally find the back entrance to the shopping plaza and then proceed to confront the store manager standing on the other side of the entrance trying to tell me they're closed. After walking in the exit, I get in the manager's face and tell him that if he had some signs up out there, people would know where the hell to go! He tells me that he can't be held responsible for construction outside and I respond (5'2" but loud voice all the same) that I can't be held responsible for every moron in the world preventing me from arriving at this store before it closed. I walk around grabbing things off the shelf that I don't need, basically daring him to throw me out or call the police.

Slowly, I begin to wonder if the new dose of Wellbutrin has anything to do with this...

Oh dear Lini. What an unpleasant experience. And such a letdown from yesterday. Your nerves must be all atangle.

I feel terribly guilty that your thoroughly entertaining rendition of your ordeal painted such a vivid picture that I couldn't suppress a smile. I can just imagine the manager's face, not to mention the officer's face.

It does sound like something Wellbutrin would do, doesn't it. I am fortunate (I guess) that the rage it inspired in me was all directed at myself.

Goodness, that's a lot of irritibility. I'm glad the consequences weren't even worse.

Wellbutrin made me so irritible I couldn't stand to drive on the freeway. I felt like the cars in the adjacent lanes were "in my space" and I wanted to punch them out or something.

Wow! Did you have any coffee that day on top of the Wellbutrin? I heard an AA speaker at a conference once that said he knew he was getting better, he said he didn't chase other drivers past his exit any more.
That was definately a Zen experience, you were living totally in the moment!
That could be very funny on the big screen!!
Call your doc and tell him that you got your mojo workin too much. Give yourself plenty of extra time to drive anywhere.
Deep breaths. 8^D

You guys are sweet, thank you for understanding.

Luckily I had therapy this morning and apparently last nights' episode was a metaphor for the incredibly difficult time I have asking for help (based on events that tie back to childhood) and my reaction to asking, and no one being able to. (All that from a trip to the grocery store - No wonder I pay this man so much!)

So anyway, I hate to blame the drugs though it seems others can relate! I will try to stick through this initial ramp up and hope that society isn't irreparably harmed.

thanks again. if I hadn't had someplace to type all of this I don't know what would have happened (let's just say it probably would have involved some Jack Daniels and chocolate donuts)

thanks!

About asking for help. And my husband and I are now projecting that onto my daughter...!!! When asked (at a parenting class I go to) what important value I'd like to instill in my children (all other parents said Respect) I said, "respect goes without saying, I think, everyone here answered that, of course that's number one... but I want my child to learn how to ask for help." I think too many kids get frustrated because they don't ask for help... adults too. It's even more frustrating being at the end of your rope, finally reaching out and getting rejected. I can TOTALLY relate. Let's try to get better at that Lini, okay? :)

My particular variation is that I can't stand to be a bother to anyone. So last week I was in real trouble and didn't want to bother him by calling him, so I didn't. We're trying to figure out whether I fear being abandoned if I'm a bother, or if it is just related to my overwhelming obsessive fear of being a bad girl.

And I'm supposed to practice bothering him.

Fortunately I was in a psych hospital during my Wellbutrin trial, so the consequences weren't too dire (except for the staff, who probably thought I was always that way). Irritability is the only thing I remember about the drug. That was over ten years ago. It has been touted as a good AD for bipolar, which conclusion must have been based on faulty research. Irritabiliy is a hallmark for bipolar, and Wellbutrin, from what I've seen on this board, seems to exacerbate it.

Blessings,

Chris A.

Yes, better at that is a main goal for me. It is funny, an english teacher in highschool told me that the thing you like best about yourself/ or another person will also be the trait you most struggle with. I LIKE that I am independent, hard headed, determined yadda yadda, but it is very lonely when you handle things emotionally by yourself, or seek out people that you know can't support you the way you need to be supported (to prove/justify your hypothesis). I think this will take time to relearn, thanks for understanding . . . your post was really "helpful" ;) Seriously, thank you.

Determined to give Wellbutrin a try...

I have also found that Wellbutrin seems to cause irritability, also muscle twitching. It amuses me to think that Wellbutrin/Zyban is supposed to help you stop smoking.
It's also irritating to me that my insurance company doesn't want to pay for Wellbutrin. Whether it's prescribed for depression or smoking cessation, surely it's cheaper than time in the psychiatric or oncology ward.
Despite the irritability, and having to pay for Wellbutrin out of pocket, I asked my psychiatrist for an anti-depressant that absolutely would not cause weight gain, which only makes everything worse.
I'm giving the stuff a month to make me cheerful.

P.S. Sorry if this belongs on PB.

I'm glad you're giving WB a try. I hope it helps. I have been using it for more than 3 years and think it is the only drug that has worked well enough to keep (I've tried about 8 others). One thought though: you say you'll give it a month to make you cheerful.

I don't want you to become disappointed with WB if you don't see results in a month. It can take longer than that -- especially if you have to increase your dose to a level that is therapeutic for you. Plus, it won't make you cheerful per se, but you probably know that, right? I must say I felt pretty darn cheerful and a lot better about myself when I lost weight on WB and went from a circulation-cutting size 18 to a loose and baggy 14 in jeans. Just bought a pair of 12s that are snug. Will work on getting them baggy. I've never worn a 12 before...

Good luck and take care.
