Feeling Awful

Posted by tina on December 14, 2001, at 9:41:22

This anxiety is killing me. I can't even drink a glass of water without feeling sick. I feel nauseated ALL the time. I don't sleep because I am afraid of the panic attacks. They come every night. Terror, inability to breathe, throat closing up, nausea, dizziness, vomiting. It's happening every night and it's happening every day. I'm taking the klonopin and it helps a little but my prescription only allows for .5mg a day so I take it sparingly. I don't want to suffer withdrawal either so I'm afraid to take alot of it. I don't have anything else. I don't have a doc. I don't know what to do. I spent two years like this about 9 years ago. I threw up several times a day, I had persistent health problems, I couldn't eat anything but lettuce. I lost 25 pounds which wasn't so bad but that put me into anorexic mode and I continued in that behaviour for quite some time after. I stayed severly underweight for years. This anxiety is causing me now to eat very little. Broth, a little water, mostly crackers. I feel horrible all the time.
What can I do? Herbs? Vitamins? Help...

Find a good pdoc. There are some out there. Herbs and vitamins are like trying to empty Lake Michigan with a spoon. Don't worry about Klonopin withdrawal. If you need it for life, how will you ever find out about it? A mood stabilizer might help, too. But you need a good doctor to help you with this. Call your local teaching hospital connected with a university.
Take care of yourself.

Tina,

I don't have any answers, but I understand what you're feeling. Sometimes all I can do is say I care, a lot. I hope that's enough...

Love you,
Greg

No, it's not the holidays Kev. I usually love christmas. I just can't get into any of it. I feel so sick. I'm the poster girl for dramamine.
I ate about 150 cals yesterday and I've as yet had nothing today. My heart rate has been a consistent 130 beats per minute when it should be around 70. I'm desperately leaning toward the big knives in the kitchen but trying hard not to go there.......(I'm a cutter not suicidal so don't worry about that) but I am getting seriously desperate. Plus, no reaction from the dh and that is really depressing. I wrote an email to him today about how awful I'm feeling. I got no answer. The I called and he didn't answer his phone.
He just now called to tell me he was going to be late b/c he's out with his buddies for a beer......
SOmetimes I feel like I'm going to have to do something BIG to get anyone's attention about the way I feel.....

Tina,

I would try a couple of mgs of Klonopin. I take it too on a daily basis and I have found that when I start to have a really bad time with anxiety, if I take enough to stop the anxiety, i can go back to my regular dose next day or so. Sort of like short circuiting the anxiety cycle. I know you worry about addiction, but it sounds like the anxiety is really getting the better of you right now. Ever tried any of the anti-psychotics like zyprexa?

Let me know if I can help.

Greg

I can relate to the food issues. its always been a major warning flag for me when im getting depressed again. the only problem is that by the time it pops up, i dont even care anymore. sweetie, i wish i had some better advice for you, or knew more about anxiety, i feel like i should have some sage words of wisdom for you, and i dont. im trying to think of something extremely healthy that has a good share of calories in it that you might be able to stomach.

also, have you tried taking a sleep med? if you can force your body into sleep it might help to calm some of your edginess. a vitamin wont be a cure all, but you should still be taking one a day, especially if you arent eating. it'll help sustain your body for the long haul until you can get everything back on track. hang in there honey, we're all cheering for you, and we know you can win.

Greg
I would take the klonopin everyday but the prescrip only allows for 1 pill a day and it wears off by dinner time. If I take 2, I end up with none left. DOc specified to pharmacy that I only get 30 pills every 30 days. They won't refull the scrip if it hasn't been a full 30 days. Is that a pain or what?
I tried seroquel a while back and it made me vomit on a daily basis. Doc told me to stop taking it. Now I have no doc so I haven't got access to any meds. I have 2 more 30 day scrips for the klonopin and then I'm on my own. Holy crap. what am I gonna do then? Rhetorical question obviously. I'll just go not-so-quietly INSANE!!!!!

thanks hun. having a cheering section helps.
I've asked every doc I've ever had for a sleep med but they refuse. They tell me to get busier, exercise more, get fresh air and I'll be able to sleep just fine......I work, I exercise, I get out as much as this damned anxiety will let me but I can still be up all night long. It isn't that I'm not tired, I am exhausted. I just can't get my mind to shut up long enough for me to fall asleep. I lie in bed and get all tense. Every little noise I hear is an afront to my senses. My heart pounds, and anxiety sets in. Like I can sleep in those conditions......
I think doctors just hate me. I have 0 trust in them anymore.
thanks for caring Katey
you take care too

Tina,
Hi kiddo. I haven't followed your other posts, so I'm not sure of your RX. Your symptoms sound exactly like what my sister is going thru right now and it's hyperthoirdism(sp)... I mean, it's something you might want to look into. She has her thyroid med and feel find. Her doctor told her that their are many misdiagnosis for someone with anxiety and someone with a thyroid problem.
But...... I myself get anxiety attacks... big ones, valium works the best for me. Anyway, I probably should read more about your before I responded to this, but I saw so many similaries. Sorry if I'm out of line...... and yes... get a doctor!! Take care. Kristi

I have talked to him quite a bit about my meds so he knows the story and I think respects my judgement to some extent. And Tina - you need a doc. One you can work with on meds and other things. I am totally honest with my pdoc and have found her to be very helpful. If I tell her that anxiety is crippling me (and I can sympathize with you because anxiety has been my biggest problem)we work to find something to help. its too bad you cant see my pdoc, my second meeting with him i told him i was having problems sleeping and he wrote me a prescrip. have you ever tried an SSRI? some of them have really sedatative effects. like effexor...which is for GAD and depression, when they put me on that i slept about twelve hours a day. do you know if any of your meds are suposed to give you energy?

are you doing any better?
keep in touch

> I had a thyroid test in june. It's fine. I've had 3 tests since all this anxiety/depression started and there has never been any indication of thyroid disorder. It would be wonderful if that's all it was. A little thyroid hormone and i'd be cured. Jeez, how wonderful would that be?

I had what I thought was a diagnosis a couple of months ago but it turned out to just be my pdoc telling me something because I insisted that she tell me something. I was tired of being a non-specified disorder.....Now, I don't know anything. The last time I saw her she said there wasn't anything wrong with me that a job and getting out wouldn't fix...yeah well, I have a job. I get out as much as I can and I'm worse than before....
I take klonopin sparingly. Mostly I just suffer in silence at home. This is really the only place I can talk about it and feel understood.
Thanks Kristi
I hope your sister continues on her road of success.

>Dear Tina~
Only have a quick mini-moment here.
Gotta work. But, I am so worried for you. I hate the misery our 'ailments' put us through! One of my biggest probs is energy, and the lack there-of. It's the reason I don't post much, but wd. like to.
It has also made me quite slow in getting help. I am only on my fourth trial of a therapist/p-doc. I couldn't seem to get out of my 'safe haven' (home) to search much, but, lord, did I ever need to!
Question-Have you seen many docs? Cause you must keep searching for someone who really HEARS you and is compassionate and willing to REALLY help you. It's a terrible struggle, I know. Very draining, sometimes, that search, for a doc, and then, for the right meds. I am not yet in complete remission, but, I am better, and that is something. It is only b/c I finally found a doc who believes as strongly in med therapy as just 'talking it out'.
Are you planning on searching some more? Please say yes.

Concerned~

I'm glad your pharmacist has respect for you Greg. It sounds great. I don't know any who would be like that here. I"ve had my current pharmacist for 5 years now and she won't even fill a scrip that doesn't have a date printed on it. She calls the doc for confirmation......very uptight. I guess i can't blame her. She's just covering her butt. She knows me well and I think if I asked her for latitude, she'd say "now Tina, you should know I can't do that"
I wish I could find a pdoc. I'm so disenchanted with all docs right now. I called my old gp and the soonest appointment she's got is february. I took it nonetheless. Maybe I'll feel better by then and not need it. Who knows.
Spent most of this past weekend drunk to the hilt. It didn't relax me at all. Made me nervous and anxious but I just kept pouring the stuff down my throat just trying to stop the fear. I drank so much, I really wonder why it didn't help......funny, I can smoke pot and not relax either. I get so anxious and shakey when I smoke pot or drink or try to meditate. Anything that is suppose to relax me just makes me more anxious and aggressive. I guess that's why pdocs give up on me.
I've never really met a pdoc that I could be totally honest with. I'm not comfortable. I always want to please people. To make them like me and this extends to pdocs too. I clam up in their offices. It's kinda hopeless isn't it??

No. Can't stand gatorade or sports drinks. They are all sugar and sugar makes me sick right away.
I know I need a doc. I know.
Someday maybe I'll find one that actually wants to help me. It's hard to imagine that they exist.

I thought WEllbutrin was supposed to give you energy Katey.
I can't take SSRI's at all. I've tried lots of them and tI seem to be extremely intolerant of them. They make me violently ill.
I can fall asleep, the thing is, I only stay asleep for a few minutes or maybe an hour. Then I'm up and can't get back again. I sleep so lightly that a pin dropping can wake me. Maybe if this insomnia last long enough, I'll just be so exhauted that I'll fall down and not get up for a week. Oh wouldn't that feel good......

> its too bad you cant see my pdoc, my second meeting with him i told him i was having problems sleeping and he wrote me a prescrip. have you ever tried an SSRI? some of them have really sedatative effects. like effexor...which is for GAD and depression, when they put me on that i slept about twelve hours a day. do you know if any of your meds are suposed to give you energy?

They tell me to get busier, exercise more, get fresh air and I'll be able to sleep just fine......I work, I exercise, I get out as much as this damned anxiety will let me but I can still be up all night long. It isn't that I'm not tired, I am exhausted. I just can't get my mind to shut up long enough for me to fall asleep. I lie in bed and get all tense. Every little noise I hear is an afront to my senses. My heart pounds, and anxiety sets in. Like I can sleep in those conditions......

Sort of like short circuiting the anxiety cycle. I know you worry about addiction, but it sounds like the anxiety is really getting the better of you right now. Ever tried any of the anti-psychotics like zyprexa?

nightlight
I've seen 6 in ten years. From social workers to psychologists to psychiatrists to counselors. The psychologists were flakey, the psychiatrists were distant and clinical (the last one was just plain unsupportive and mean) and the social worker was well, a social worker. She dealt with everything like I was 4 years old and kindergarten was too tough for me..........jeez.
Yes nightlight, I will search again but I just don't have the effort in me at the moment. I've been burned so many times. Perhaps in the new year I'll be more inclined. I'm just trying to go one hour at a time right now.
I hope you have a good day
Tina

I feel horrible all the time.

welbutrin does- its mostly the only reason i can stay awake in class. effexor is a sedative thats not quite an SSRI- its in its own class right now because its patented. what meds are you one right now?

> Hi. Can you stomach Gatorade or similar sports drink? It helped me when I was sick to my stomach for a couple of months. I lost 30 lbs. in 3 weeks!! The Gatorade helped replace a lot of the minerals & salts I was losing from the shits
>& being generally dehydrated.

Maybe you felt it helped you but Gatorade or Powerade are not serious drinks for serious rehydration needs. There's more potassium in a banana than that drink! For serious rehydration get packets of rehydration salts that you mix in a gallon of water. This is the stuff they use to treat cholera or severe diarea. You can get it in a clinic or some outdoor recreational stores like REI. I once had to use them after I got really dehydrated from moving during the heat and it worked wonders! :)

Wow Tina,
And I was upset at my therapist being insensitive. Don't go back to that doctor. If your gp can't recommend anyone better that that, you need a new gp too. I know you don't feel up to it right now, but do you thing your husband (I think I remember your mentioning a husband) check around for you. Are there any local support groups where you can get recommendations? Maybe you could post a request here or on the regular P-B board asking for a recommendation in your area.
I know it's discouraging, but you really do need to find someone. I'm looking around locally for a DBT group. It sounds like we deal with some of the same issues, are there any DBT groups where you are?
I know, this is probably more than you want to hear right now, but I am concerned for you.

Naught but Klonopin and only when I really really need it. It's a tiny prescription.
