Dunno, but I remember reading that it is a depressant.

Alcohol is a depressant, toxic, a posion, and a fuel all rolled into one. If it is one or 2 beers
then the dark parts of beer and other drinks are often what cause next day problems. Any more than that then you need to remember that alcohol is a depressant, toxic, a posion, and a fuel all rolled into one.Pat

Those effects would depend on the amount you have it seems however why is the impact inconsistent, one time a couple of beers can leave one feeling wretched the day after, other times not. It would seem to be the additives in this case but these were brewed at the pub and should have been low on additives.
Yet a couple of more shots of vodka or tequila can have no ill effects on occassion. What's the diff? Metabolism of the day, combined with the other factors?
And fuel? Fuel for what?

We have been using alcohol as a fuel for centuries. It burns, after all.pat

They use it as fuel for cars in Brazil, I think.

Beer, vodka, and tequila. Hmm. It is my opinion that if you are drinking every or most nights, even 2 drinks, that you are doing harm. Not to mention ignoring the "Do Not Drink Alcohol" stickers that come on your meds.Pat

Your assumption that I am drinking every or most nights is totally off the mark, as drinking even lightly is the exception and not the rule for me. And I am not currently on ADs so, so much for that (more understandable given the site)assumption.
However if your prior assumption had been true there are studies that cite one or two drinks every night or so of wine (and perhaps clear spirits) as being good for one's heart. So...go figure...

The studies that find a glass of wine a day is good for your heart only looked at the heart effects and did not consider the whole body effects. As it is the bioflavinoids in wine that are benificial it would seem there are many better
sources for them.Pat

Bioflavonoids yes. But alcohol in small amounts is also good for you. As for it being a depressant, it's a *CNS* depressant. To assume it therefore causes the condition we call depression is like saying that because shoes leave a depression in the lawn, wearing shoes will give you depression. Plenty of people drink without getting depression. However for us I believe it's dose related. Too much continually consumed will protract and worsen depression in most of us.
