Racing thoughts

Posted by Rahilka on October 22, 2013, at 23:24:31

What is the difference between the racing thoughts one gets from anxiety and the racing thoughts one gets in a manic or hypomanic phase?

My whole life is racing thoughts. That is all my brain is filled with, all the time. If someone were to ask me what one of those thoughts were about, I wouldn't be able to tell them - it's just this feeling of constant background noise. Antidepressants either make these racing thoughts worse or make me more depressed or both, it seems like. However, I know that antidepressants also cause an increase in anxiety upon start-up. So, I guess what I am asking is how can I tell if the racing thoughts I get from being unmedicated & the ones I get from going on ADs is just from severe anxiety or from a possible hypomanic phase?

I just can't understand why nothing seems to be getting better even after lots of therapy and all of the SSRIs/SNRIs/a really short trial of one MAOI. Am I not giving them enough time or are ADs not for me anymore?

PS - I apologize if I put this is in the wrong section. It has to do mainly with psychology I think although medication is a part of my problem.

Hi, Rahilka, and welcome to Babble. I am not certain of medications that help diminish racing thoughts during the day. Just the ones that help me get to sleep (ambien CR, Trileptal, and Tofranil).

Your question would likely get better answered on the main medication board.

However, since you are already here on Psychology, I can tell you that therapy led me to try out meditation as a form of relief during during the day. Specifically, Yoga Nidra, or guided meditation done during shivassana, has helped me calm down a great deal. I rotate through several recordings of guided meditations, and they have helped me focus much better during the day.

Don't know if that helped, but welcome to our community, and try out the Medication board for a chemical solution. I personally find a blend of medication and talk therapy has been most useful to me.

Best of luck, and I look forward to seeing you on the boards.

I had racing thoughts when I was young....wheels within wheels. Hypotheticals.....what you would say or think if I said this and how my mother would think about what you had to say or not and so on, if you get my drift. That has passed, along with a lot of brain cells. I don't know if this is what you are talking about though.
