Is anyone else triggered by this week's news?

Posted by TherapyGirl on November 13, 2011, at 21:15:07

I'm terribly upset about the Penn State thing -- sickened and angry and I don't know what else. I read every article, listen to the news coverage about it and can't seem to get it out of my mind for more than a few minutes at a time. I still can't believe that this happened in the last decade and it feels like we haven't come any further down the road in protecting children from predators of any kind.

Is this happening to anyone else? If so, how do you cope with it?

I'm not particularly affected by this story but my general strategy is to avoid the news coverage when it upsets me. Definitely all TV coverage and probably as much as possible of the print/internet media as well. For one thing I've found that it's rarely "news" but most often a continuous rehashing sprinkled with speculations. And the day to day coverage so often seems to deliberate try to enflame your emotions. That really angers me but in the end that anger at them for trying to manipulate me also makes it easier for me to stay away.

In the end I've found I know just as much about what happened by only reading a summary at the end of the week or month and I miss out on a lot of the stress.

I'm also avoiding most of this coverage currently. It seems to be long on hype and short on actual content right now.

Good luck.

I'm not exactly *triggered*, but I can barely stand to think about this story. It's so awful. I like to think that we've made some progress on these issues in the past 20 years, and it's incredibly discouraging, infuriating, and sad to see how this has gone/is going down.

Please try to take care of yourself. Is there anything you've tried in the past to successfully distract yourself away from this type of thing, and get more grounded?

Not that I'm suggesting eveyone should ignore these stories. Quite the contrary. But I am worried about you in particular not being in a good place for handling this one.

hugs to you

P

Ya' know that would probably be a better approach for me. I don't know why I'm so obsessed with the coverage. I think part of me thinks if I know every single detail then I will perhaps understand why all the people involved made the choices they did, but it doesn't happen that way. It just makes me crazier.

Thanks for the perspective.

I've never been particularly good at letting go of things once they get hold. I am trying to not obsessively read everything that's out there like I have been doing. It's pretty much impossible to avoid completely if I watch the news at all. Today, work schedule prevented that and newspaper did not have an update, so it was a little easier to keep away from it.

Thanks, Peg.

It is a tough week for me all the way around - one of the things that my younger parts have always held on to was that if someone (anyone) knew, they would have made it stop. I have had melt downs with my therapist -- where were you?! -- because he wasn't there. I do not know how you ever, ever trust again.

I deal with it by making myself stop watching and by talking about it. But it is shocking and scary.

I know. And it makes me so angry. I'm sorry it affects you like this too, Daisy. Hope things get better soon.

I have that reaction to any stupefyingly evil event. The problem is what they used to say about Eichmann--evil is banal.

I'm sickened, but to me, the worst horrors are the so called "priests" who get away with molesting children for many years, and so many of them! They seem to be protected by the Catholic church and end up being moved to a different location.

Now this too is very extreme madness against innocent children, all by the "pious" clergy who are supposed to be men of God. Shivers down my spine.....very scary. This is not a church.
