Dinah - what happened with the scent?

Posted by wittgensteinz on February 21, 2009, at 12:40:50

Dinah,

It just crossed my mind that I never read a follow-up about the problem you had with the scent your T was using in his room (what are those things called - air fresheners? Air polluters?!). Maybe I missed it, but did the situation get resolved? I hope it did in any case.

It was like he was a different person entirely. I'd brought some information on scent and migraines, and he was very concerned that it had made me unwell. He also remembered other times that scent had been a problem for a client or group member.

I left early that day because I was feeling sick, but by the next session it was gone and it's worn off by now.

I do think he may be a bit annoyed still. I asked for and got a hug at the end of the session last time since he was going away for a week and I was feeling a bit unconnected. He commented that I smelled nice and I could see what was going through his mind. But really, there's a big difference between some peppermint scented shower gel from a company that I can admittedly tolerate and a reed diffuser in a small space.

Maybe that's just guilt on my part. Although he's never commented on how I smell before.

HI Dinah,

I think there is a big difference in artificial smells and natural smells. My asthma is triggered in any air type fresher, even those popular reed things. But things like natural smells, like mint, herbs, and stuff like that, in small amounts are okay for me. I think there is a huge connection in smells and health, artificial smells are like chemicals but natural smells are real, I believe our body responds to "poisons". JMHO

I'm glad he was more receptive.

It's interesting he commented on your smell - maybe this was his unconscious speaking - or perhaps it was very conscious?! At least, whatever he thinks about your shower gel, he accepted your reasons and need for that stinky thing to be removed from the office. I guess you can't expect him to fully understand the difference between subtle tolerable scents and full-on headache-inducing onces if he was willing to put the reed diffuser there in the first place.

Just glad you don't have to endure any more headaches (at least of the scent-induced kind) when you go to therapy.

Hi Dinah,

I am very glad he removed them!!!!! And I think it's good that you stood up for your health, to say nothing of your right to breath chemical-free air (although that's a right that seems to be getting walked all over these days).

I'm so glad he was co-operative.

You probably did multiple 'favours' to people who also had problems with the smell & weren't assertive or brave enough to say it.

Hugs, Kath

I'm happy this got resolved! I'm sure everyone else in the office thanks you, too.
