What do we think?
The article makes some good points...and I know that it has helped me when my therapist has said things like, "I felt the same way about my therapist" - especially when we are talking about wanting to feel special. It is like he really gets it.
But maybe not necessary for Pdocs?

> But maybe not necessary for Pdocs? For what my opinions worth, YES!!! A analyst needs to have exeperienced their own analyst. If you just having something like CBT then no, but if your going for the deep life changing kind of therapy as I am currently in, theh the answer is YES!

It's an interesting article. I think the answer has to be yes - certainly for in-depth therapy (psychodynamic/analytic). It gives me comfort to know that my therapist has had that same 'humbling experience' as it is put in the article. I also know he had his own fight with depression - I asked him once whether he had ever been depressed - whether he could relate directly to the gravity of my depression. I don't know too much about his past, and I don't think I should, but I know enough that he can truly understand what I'm experiencing.
As for other types of therapy - structured text-book therapy (CBT?) - I'm not sure if it is so necessary. I haven't had CBT so am in no position to know.
It's a pity that psychiatrists today require no psychotherapy as part of their training - I'm sure it would be advantageous to them in their work. Psychotherapy is an important part of psychiatry after all.

You bring up a good point about CBT, and I'm going to check w/my pdoc to see if he had to go through therapy himself, although he is more CBT oriented.
Probably this is a good question to ask any potential T!

I know my t has been in therapy. It was maditory for all students in his program to go through so many sessions. I think the intensity is different though. I think it depends on why the individual is going through therapy, the entensity is different.

You know I have never thought about this under you asked the question. I do think that they would be better at their jobs for going through but a prerequisite I am not sure it is necessary. Empathy is always more powerful than sympathy.

I read somewhere that (unwritten rule) that they ALL should be in therapy. I agree...they have issues just like anyone else.
Freud said that every 2-3 years they should all get a tune-up!
Never cared for Freud, but on this one, I agree.

Therapists should definitely have undergone their own therapy before seeing patients. Psychoanalysis should be a prerequisite to getting a degree actually, and although medication helps, there is no way we are near having medication be a cure for mental illness, mental disorders, even mood disorders are affected by Thinking and Processing, the way we think and process as individuals has everything to do with our psychic state, it's ridiculous to think that a few neurotransmitters can control everything. We're whole beings, not just chemicals, and doctors themselves admit to knowing naught what they're doing when it comes to what came first, the feeling or the neurotransmitter?

man I saw for therapy, for help, bless his heart, said that no, he'd never seen a therapist. I don't believe him, I didn't believe him then, and trust was Out the Window. Because even if it were true and he hadn't seen a therapist, he just blew his own medicine out the window and alienated himself.
Having said that, I realize I haven't asked my current therapist (I call her a therapist but she's a counsellor) ... if she ever gets counselling.
Should I? I know she's qualified, somehow I don't feel the need to ask.
So if I felt a need to ask me last therapist if he ever saw a psychologist, there must have been a good reason.
This is the end of the thread.
