It's an interesting article. I think the answer has to be yes - certainly for in-depth therapy (psychodynamic/analytic). It gives me comfort to know that my therapist has had that same 'humbling experience' as it is put in the article. I also know he had his own fight with depression - I asked him once whether he had ever been depressed - whether he could relate directly to the gravity of my depression. I don't know too much about his past, and I don't think I should, but I know enough that he can truly understand what I'm experiencing.
As for other types of therapy - structured text-book therapy (CBT?) - I'm not sure if it is so necessary. I haven't had CBT so am in no position to know.
It's a pity that psychiatrists today require no psychotherapy as part of their training - I'm sure it would be advantageous to them in their work. Psychotherapy is an important part of psychiatry after all.
