I have a question to those of you who have had OCD when you were pregnant. Or even just general depression when you are pregnant.
I have mild OCD and sometimes it bothers me, but so far, it has been limited to only random strange thoughts which usually goes away. But it causes a great deal of anxiety, because some of them are very blasmpheous and some of them are violent thoughts.
Now that I am thinking of having a child I am very worried about my OCD. I become very unhappy and anxious when I have these thoughts, and wonder how it will affect my future kid if I have them during pregnancy. I haven't been on any medication for it, and I am not planning to be on any during pregnancy.
Any suggestions/ideas?

How a patient will respond during pregnancy is a very tricky thing to predict. But what I can tell you is that the biochemistry in your brain and body will change.
It may make symptoms of OCD worse, or they could completely go away.
Either way, before getting pregnant you need to work out a plan with your ob/gyn AND a psychiatrist that will support you during your pregnancy.
I've known a lot of so called "mentally well" pregnant women, and sometimes the things that come out of their mouths (especially when they are close to term) convince me that they are possessed. And they have the most beautiful healthy babies. So I wouldn't worry about your thoughts hurting your child.
Just see your doctors and have a plan. I think you will be just fine.

Hi Orchid! how are you.
say i'm excited for you. i'm in the process now of winding down all medication so i can get pregnant also. my pdoc says that pregnancy is really safe (regarding depression ans such) but he's worried about the time i'm off meds and trying to get preg.
my pdoc want to save the zyprexa for last to go off of. he's most concerned about that one. that really helps iwth my ocd.
so i'll let you know when i start going off it.it's scary and exciting. good luck to you and a quick pregnancy.

I only have my own experience.
I wasn't on meds, and I was mildly depressed and had moderate OCD during my pregnancy. A lot of it centered around the baby's health.
But after he started moving inside me, I found it a magic soother for my OCD. I'd sit and feel him move, and I felt fine.

Thanks Madeline. That was reassuring. Most of everything I am worried about my ocd thougths affecting the health of the baby (Which as it is, I am very worried about even now). It was a great reassurance to know that other women have had normal babies.
I just feel so bad to have these thoughts. It is very upsetting sometimes.
But due to other reasons, I don't have a psychiatrist which might make it little tricky to handle it. I am scared of psychiatrists, and besides, I will be travelling on and off and might not be in one place to get constant supervision by a psych. I will have to deal with it on my own.

Thanks B2C. I hope it goes well for you too. I am planning to depend heavily on meditation and other means to occupy my mind, but I don't know what to do if t*t becomes too much.
I haven't told my hsuband much about my OCD because of my shame around these feelings. He knows a little, but mostly I try to handle it by myself.

>Thanks B2C ! You always lift up my spirits. I know I can count on babble!!
Everything else is going fine in family thank God. I am in the US for a brief time now, and of course I didn't take up a job, because of my shuttling back and forth. And my husband has been quite well too. We haven't had any fight for more than 6 months - except maybe one or two mild ones here and there. But things have been looking good so far. And hope it will continue to go that way - depending on God to take care of everything.
This is the end of the thread.
