Question about confidentiality

Posted by Aphrodite on March 5, 2005, at 21:04:46

I have not given written or verbal permission for my T to talk to my pdoc (or anyone else for that matter). My pdoc has permission to communicate with my PCP for med reasons only but not with my T.

Is there some reason that my T can supercede this? He kinda sorta gently intimated that there are circumstances in which he could communicate with my pdoc.

Anyone know the rules? (Yeah, I'm super-paranoid.)

I'd ask him to show me that rule. My therapist hasn't ever said he could talk to my pdoc against my will. The police maybe, or my husband to arrange hospitalization, but he's never intimated there are any circumstances that would enable him to talk to my psychiatrist, unless maybe I was *in* the hospital and they were both part of my treatment team or something.

I'm not saying he's lying, but maybe he's interpreting it idiosyncratically. :)

I think the rule is that confidentiality can be broken if your therapist thinks you might harm yourself or others. So, if you let him think that you could convince your pdoc to give you a 90 day supply of sleeping pills, and you plan to take them all at once, he might have leeway to call. But even if he did, your pdoc is also restricted by even tougher HIPPA rules.

Is there a reason you don't want them to talk? It might be a good idea...
