Sense of smell and brain degeneration

Posted by stargazer2 on February 22, 2008, at 21:14:05

I've been asked to take part in a research project involving loss of smell as related to neurological disorders. The theory is that the sense of smell may be lost early in neurological conditions such as Alzeimers or parkinson's and the study is being done to determine if there is a correlation. Sort of interesting since I have always felt that some of the severe neurological conditions are caught too late to halt or reverse the progress of the disease

I was thinking that everyone should be given Aricept or other meds to prevent dementia, etc before it already has ravaged the brain.

It seems like a forward thinking project and may impact those of us in our middle years before the brain starts to degenerate, causing irreversible loss of brain function.

Sign me up lost sense of taste and smell four years ago. MRI of brain said it was normal. What are they going to do? Two taste and smell centers Wake Forrect Hospital and one in DC said a virus attacked neurons of nose and theophylline was the cure. I didn't buy it and didn't take theophylline as nothing wrong with breathing no allergies or anything else. Love Phillipa always thought related to the chronic lymes I have had for who knows how long?

Phillipa, as you know so much about the brain is unknown so no matter what they tell you it really just means they don't know anyway. Honesty is important here and most MD's are not humble enough to say it especially when the cost to say it is so much.

Hey welcome back, I'm surprised, not really, to see you here. What would you do if your computer pooped out for more than a few days? Major withdrawl, right?

I start work tomorrow, $ and benies, should be a nice change to finally not feel guilty about spending.

Hope you are doing well after your TT..but you're a champ and I bet you had no complications that you were so worried about...see anxiety for no reason.

I'll email you tomorrow after first day. Mostly administrative day, meeting everyone, filling out forms etc. Did I tell you about the drug test? I'll write you tomorrow. Funny story.

Sounds like your surgery went well. I wouldn't worry about Motrin and Percoset. That is just to ensure you don't take too much of either. Why do they want you to take Motrin round the clock, back pain? Actually my drug book doesn't have it as a drug-drug interaction. Only advice for you with Motrin is to watch for bleeding of course. Take with food or milk, not on an empty stomach.

Are you still on Valium too?

Be good, pamper yourself alot!!!

Stargazer no you didn't tell me about the drug test. Will be looking forward to it and yes to valium. I was thinking and they say medicate before pain so took a third of a percocet. Better but not much. Oh I had to give myself a fleets too and that story isn't funny as I'd had MOM, magnesium, prune juice. I'll tell you that too. Good luck tomorrow. Love Jan

Hi again Phillipa!

I also lost sense of smell about 5 yrs ago. The docs didn't exactly know why. My left lung was operated 2004: ca pulmonis. Then i got "sytostaatit" , whatever the cell poisons may be called in english, i really don't care.

But now when the parkinson's began to affect my right arm, i heard that losing sense of smell also is a symptom of that disease.

But after all, i'm alive 4 yrs after the operation. Spring is coming, i can see the nature waking up, feel the warm sunshine on my skin, see flowers blooming and hear the birds singing, i can touch my nearest ones, talk with them, have physical exercise, enjoy culture, drive my car... etc.

and feel allright!

Many people are worse off, unfortunately.

yours Chris
