Sense of smell and brain degeneration

Posted by stargazer2 on February 22, 2008, at 21:14:05

I've been asked to take part in a research project involving loss of smell as related to neurological disorders. The theory is that the sense of smell may be lost early in neurological conditions such as Alzeimers or parkinson's and the study is being done to determine if there is a correlation. Sort of interesting since I have always felt that some of the severe neurological conditions are caught too late to halt or reverse the progress of the disease

I was thinking that everyone should be given Aricept or other meds to prevent dementia, etc before it already has ravaged the brain.

It seems like a forward thinking project and may impact those of us in our middle years before the brain starts to degenerate, causing irreversible loss of brain function.
