I am personally afraid of microwaves. Terrified. Somtimes I avoid going into the school lounge because it is so heavily populated with wi-fi users. People with schizohprenia can be paranoid like this, although I don't have other symptoms, so I don't think I have schizophrenia.

OMG!

I hope Wi-Fi isn't transmitted using microwaves.....surely not? I think it must be radio waves.

(Whilst sat using own wi-fi broadcast in my living room!!)

Oh dear!!!

Okay, so I was slightly off: (I looked it up on Wikipedia!!)

Microwaves are used in wi-fi:

Although (I'm hoping!!!) the strengths are very different.

Any ideas?

I personally think that if an organism is bombared enough with focused radio and tuned frequencies then could impact the way that cells function. Think of it this way. We use RTMS electromagnetic pulses to alter mood, why is it so inconcieveable that smaller weaker frequencies might not be alterting the way our brain works, perhaps not so profound upfront, but over time..

I remember reading some reports of cellular responses to exposure to 900mhz phones inducing certain cellular proteins like heat shock protein etc.

It freaks me out, I am going to develop a line of baseball hats that will try and protect the skull, from such insults.

I know I am paranoid, but I don't care.

Back when I had the ungrounded self-confidence of a budding scientist I used to think that (short of actually cooking your brain) nothing of longer wavelength than UV had any effect on human tissue. Now I'm much less certain. I just heard a researcher rather casually refer to using a magentic pulse to temporarily shut down an area of a subject's brain. I sure hope it was temporary.

My mother-in-law says paranoid people see the world as it really is. And just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they're not out to get you.

Thats exactly it. We don't have much of a clue as to what we're doing in my opinion. The technology has just been to *convienient* to pass on.

Its been mentioned before, but I still don't know why, when you go for a dental X-wray, they make you wear a lead vest to cover every organ in your body, yet aim the wray-gun directly at your head.

The amount of excess (or even intended) microwaves transmitted by cellular phones, cordless phones, and wi-fi transmission is down in the milliwatt level.

Microwave ovens may cook at 1000 watts, but are inefficient and deliver less than that to the food. They're regulated in the US so that about 2" from the machine, the legal limit is 1 milliwat t / cm2.

Every day we're hit by cosmic radiation, background radiation from ancient granite rocks which give off radon, etc. Not to mention solar exposure which the world has foisted on Australia and New Zealand through CFCs and other compounds.

It's all relative.
