Blood sugars up. Just complaining.

Posted by Dinah on March 12, 2006, at 10:06:24

I've always gotten through my deadlines at work with a constant low flow of biggie Dr. Pepper. I gave that up a year or two ago. But I do eat more when I have to work more. It's the only way for me to put in long hours. I'm not talking exceptionally long here - eight hours, say.

But I haven't been able to work more than six or seven lately without crashing. And brilliant me finally decided to take my bloog sugars to find that they're not astronomical but they are above target. 225 before bed last night and 126 this morning.

Which may have something to do with it being so hard to work. But on the other hand if I keep the blood sugars under tight control with diet, I won't be able to work either.

I'm just complaining, not looking for answers. I'm so angry with my body. I'm not overly happy with my husband who said that while diabetes may not be a condition covered by disability, it would be if they used me as an example.

I'm so dag-blained tired. So tired that it hurts so.

I'm letting everyone down. Family, work. I'm afraid I'll lose my medical benefits if I can't pull myself together at work.

I posted this at Health, because it's related to health. But I'm not really looking for answers. I know there are none. Doing what I am supposed to do leaves me unproductive. Doing what worked for me before leaves me unproductive.

And I smell. :(

Not sweaty. Sort of a sickly, yeasty smell.

But maybe that's all in my mind.

Dinah, does the smell sort of remind you of the way a baby might smell when it could use a bath? That may sound silly, but a few weeks ago, I noticed I smelled kind of yeasty too. My husband said it reminded him of a baby - and not a fresh one. Made me feel so good. Anyway, I never figured out what caused it, but I don't smell anymore. Maybe I should have myself checked for diabetes. I don't really know what the symptoms are, but I'm significantly overweight and have been for a number of years.

I can't imagine having to give up Dr. Pepper. Without it, my life would have no meaning. I've cut back to one daily, but it's literally the highlight of my day. Not to mention the fact that I'm a total b!tch if I DON'T have one.

I'm sorry your health is giving you problems. Life is complicated enough without having to deal with that too.

I wouldn't say it smelled like a dirty baby. I'm not absolutely sure what it does smell like.

It may be in my mind. I have a recurring yeast infection under my arms (I should be grateful it isn't anywhere more painful), and it flares up when I'm under stress. I also am suspecting that my blood sugars go up when I'm under stress. So maybe there's a correlation.

Incidentally, it took a dermatologist to diagnose the yeast infection. Other doctors misdiagnosed it completely. Apparently it's not unusual for diabetics to get yeast infections in nonstandard areas. Underarms and under the breasts are two places it often shows up, although it's a bit unusual for it not to be in the more usual places as well.

Diabetes *can* cause unusual body odors, from what I researched this morning. The smell of alchohol, or fruity breath, are the most usual.

But if you're overweight, it couldn't hurt to have your doctor check you out periodically. I was borderline, but not diabetic, in January of the year I was diagnosed, and diabetic in April.

I think overall I was better off sipping the Dr. Pepper for a steady but slow sugar intake than I am with eating too much. :( I miss it. The fountain sort. Not too carbonated.

I thought about sending this via babblemail; but then thought, what the heck, let's give babblers a chuckle. So, here goes.....

I've been having problems lately with yeast infections in my belly button!! I started blowing it dry with a hair dryer after showering and that seems to help. That and a little swab of alcohol now and then.

What did your doctor suggest for yours??

:)

I'd definitely get tested for diabetes then, I'm afraid.

I got a cream for it. It works a bit. It's not great. The skin along the outside of my underarms is actually thickening a bit from the chronic irritation. She told me i can take that pill for it as well. But I'm guessing the prescription ran out long ago.

Hi there. I get chronic athlete's foot and made the astounding discovery that the same antiviral medication and strength is marketed for women's yeast infections.

So, I'd say, put some Monistat creme in your bellybutton.
I put it on my feet and it worked great and made them really soft, too. This is not a joke! I made sure I put it on at night so I wouldn't slide on the floors, though. I don't think your bellybutton will create a safety hazard, although I don't really know you :-)

I blow dry other places to avoid yeast infect.

Yes, I actually read to blow dry *privates* after showering and I haven't had a yeast infection since. ROFL

How embarrassing... why did I even share this?

Well, it doesn't drag the ground or anything, so I'm probably safe if I use it during the day! ;)

Thank you for saying this! I feel so much better now about mentioning my angry belly button! And to put YOU at ease, I'll admit that I give myself a blast down there too - since I'm already in the general vicinity!

Jammerlich, and everyone else, get your self checked for diabetes and if your fasting blood sugar is borderline, don't do what I did, put it out of my mind, thankful that I didn't have diabetes. Insist on a glucose tolerance test. Fasting blood sugars are the last thing that will go up before you're officially diabetic. in the meantime, you could be having high blood sugars after eating. This is what happened to me and now I've got constant irreversible pain in my feet from peripheral neuropathy. Metformin works for me with no side effects and if I'd started it a few years earlier I might have avoided the peripheral neuropathy altogether. I also get yeast infections, but the OTC creams work fine. Cecilia

Great internist visit

She didn't get mad at me for usually forgetting my morning meds. She just switched me to extended release. Which will likely take care of the blood sugar issue.

And she prescribed me an antispasmodic for my IBS so I can feel safe leaving the house. And one of those acid blocker pills so my reflux will be under control.

This one's a keeper.

I get yeast infections in the back of my throat... cuz apparently when I was younger I drank out of a moldy water bottle... so be careful. It's the worst ever. And you can't really blow dry your mouth... it just doesn't work
