knee pain exercise

Posted by Berberis on January 13, 2006, at 6:52:01

For the past week I've been having stabbing knee pain. It's preventing me from doing my normal daily 1 hour on my treadmill. This has me really upset because I HAVE TO exercise every day or I panic that I'll gain weight. I'm going to give the knee at least another week before consulting a doc. For now what can I do for exercise to burn calories that doesn't involve using my knee?

Now I don't know what could really prevent knee pain when exercising except not focusing on the lower body. I myself had to switch from the treadmill to the elliptical machine because of knee pain. I still get it of course, but it's lower impact so not as tough on my knee. Rest it if you have to so you can live to exercise it another day. :-)

Its hard to do excercise without using the knee unless you get some yoga/pilates videos or go to some classes. You could also try the bike which is much less strenuous on the knee. And go to the doctor :)

Okay, I'm not really answering the ? that you asked, but I feel like I need to bring something up. You said that you feel that you have to exercise every day to prevent yourself from panicking about gaining weight. It seems to me that the fear can be just as much of a problem as the hurt knee. Fear of fat can be very real and very dangerous. Of course, only you can really know how much of a problem this anxiety is for you. Some people are hard on themselves and some people have eating disorders and lots of people fall somewhere in between.

It might help you to tell yourself that you will not dramatically alter your weight by not exercising for a few days. And you certainly do not want to create or worsen knee problems. Knees are very important!

So, this wasn't meant to be a lecture. Just a reminder to love yourself and to be kind to yourself. ;)

Best,
EE

Thanks guys! (nm)
