orthostatic changes

Posted by CareBear04 on November 26, 2004, at 1:04:12

does anyone know what this means? i know the basic definition, but what disorder does it indicate? while i was in the hospital recently, the drs were really concerned because my blood pressure would drop and my pulse would go up by 50 points when i went from lying down to standing. they told me i needed to hydrate like crazy. still, i've had the problem of seeing stars and almost fainting when standing up too fast for as long as i can remember. i read somewhere that orthostatic/postural hypotension and tachycardia may be associated with chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia? anyone know if this is true? please let me know. thanks! cb

It can also be a sign of your blood pressure falling when you stand up.

Honestly -- yeah, it can be a sign of any number of Bad Things, but it's also the 'normal' state for a fair number of people. Hydration, nutrition, etc, are all important, and exercise can help, but so can being careful about standing up. Many medications can cause it, including a whole slew of antidepressants.

I say that as someone who has suffered from both orthostatic hypotension and idiopathic hypotension -- when I am under stress, or stand up for too long, I'll fall down. And, needless to say, I stand up slowly. My blood pressure tends to be on the low side anyway, and it can fall pretty dramatically.

Stay hydrated, eat healthy meals regularly, and exercise. In other words, just do all the things you're supposed to do anyway for good health. They'll all help with this.

If your doctors aren't terribly concerned, then you needn't be, either.
