I don't have health insurance and I'm broke so I'd prefer not to see a doctor. I wonder if increasing immune system boosting supplements like zinc and Vitamin C would help. I've also read about using garlic oil and/or mullein oil drops in the ear. Anyone had any success with these methods or any other holistic treatments? Or do I need to see a doctor?

Seeing a doc would be easier , youd probably get Cipro or some other antibiotic, but since you are in a jam so to speak with the insurance, my personal (not 100% positive it will work) and based on my pharmacology and other knowledge would be to use 100% pure lemon juice or oil (you can buy a the grocery store). Apply undiluted using q-tip or whatever as much as you can to the area.
Lemons, and lemon juice kill all known bacteria and viruses in vitro and studies show (pubmed!) that this effect is replicated in vivo, although less consistent. Parasites also cant stand lemon juice. If its anything fungus related, a cheap solution is to buy Nizoral Shampoo , preferrably 2% and clean your ear with it. Its ingredent (ketoconazole) is a very potent anti fungal.
Selenium, Zinc & Vitamin A will all increase your T helper cell 1 side of your immune system to fight off infections in general.. Thats good..
Good luck
All the best,
JLB

JLB,
Thanks so much for your advice. My ear seems to be much better. It took about 10 days though. I get this periodically where I have pain in that ear and around it. It may not be an infection but it feels the same as when I have had an infection. I sometimes get under the skin type cysts in or around my ear and if they are far enough into the ear it can cause this feeling. Also, if I get congestion like from a head cold or allergies, it can cause pain in that particular ear. The problem is that I don't always know which one is the real issue when I have that dull pain and I hate to go to the doctor (as I don't have insurance) just to hear that it's nothing critical.
It's really good to know about the lemon juice though - for so many different usages. I bet that would be a good topical anti-bacterial solution as well. I wonder if I could use it on my cats also or would it burn too much? Ironically, a friend of mine just gave me 3 lemons from a tree in her yard. I think I'll make some juice and freeze it.
Anyway thanks again,
Kara

I would definitely not reccomend putting undiluted lemon oil in your ear, though it doesn't burn as much as some of the other citrus oils like orange, if you're sensitive it all, it can give you a wicked burn, and having it inside your ear would make it impossible to wash out, essential oils with the exception of Tea tree, lavender and sometimes geranium and eucalyptus should always be diluted with a carrier oil.

i lay down and fill my ear with peroxide and let it boil for ten minutes both sides... and you can do this every day until it is better unless the pain is to bad..(if it is real bad see a doctor) and if it is bacteria, or fungus this will work too.

Thanks all. It turned out I didn't have an infection. The ear pain was caused by TMJ. I never knew it could cause that. But now I know what to do if I do get an ear infection...
