Has anyone here tried bellydance? I have been practicing yoga which is a huge help in getting my torpid body moving.
I used to take bellydance lessons in a lifetime ago before depression and anxiety took over my body! I remember it as a very empowering form of exercise. It helped me strengthen the connection between mind and body. Plus I lost a bunch of poundage and toned up nicely.
Any dancers out there?

I don't belly dance, however I'd love it if you belly danced for me. I'm sure that would make me feel better. I mean for the sake of my mental health can you help me out a little?

Hardee har har. Believe it or not there were guys in the bellydance class too.
Unfortunately they did their dancing on top of tables.

I saw your post in psychology.
"Anyone out there a sex addict? What helps? "This was a serious thread, please leave me alone.

OK - let's try this again. Are there any bellydancers out there in Babbleland?

No, but it seems like fun (difficult fun, but fun). My body isn't quite "bellydance-ready" at the moment, but perhaps that is a goal to strive for, LOL.
I did once have someone who belly danced in my honor--unsolicited, to thank me for something and as a farewell gesture at a farewell party. It wasn't a sexual thing--I'm a woman, and it was in a Middle Eastern cultural setting where Belly Dancing doesn't have the same connotations as in American culture, but is part of how people celebrate.

I started taking lessons when I was in an extended manic episode - and found that I just *got* it. Thankfully, the love of dance stayed while the mania left me deep in a pit. The class had women of every shape imaginable; from a long distance runner to someone with MS. We all benefited from the class, especially since we worked with the instructor as an ensemble.
I have put on 30 pounds since those classes, but now I am taking yoga and think I might be able to try it again. It is so much fun! You get to play dress up (veils, belts with fringes, finger cymbals). I did try to find an instructor locally, but did not click with the class. It was too New Age-y for me.
i think I might be ready to get back into it.

You handled yourself well dear. That's wonderful and appreciated by all concerned... Clapping**** Oh, I always wished I could bellydance, but I'm clumsy as an oaf! Are there any grace classes one can take? Or a confidence pill at least?

You won't believe this, but it helps with all that stuff. You start out goofing around with veils and belts with jingly things and before you know it, it gets all cool and pretty looking.
We practiced in a ballet studio with mirrors on 2 walls. I tried hard not to watch myself, or else I would have bolted out of the room. About 6 weeks into it something clicked. Before that I was falling over if I turned around, and taking spectacular dives by sliding on my veil.
It's like playing dressup. You can pretend you're a bellydancer :)

i've danced in front of a mirror before. not good, not good. i've seen the look of horror in the eyes of a man when they see me dance, and when i dance in front of a mirror, i see my own horror reflected. i'd cry, honestly i would. i couldn't. i'm almost crying just thinking about it. and i'm seriously being honest. (and how do you get through 6 weeks?) i've tried clogging (come on, i'm from Indi-frickin-ana! and i was 13) and could barely do that.

So you think a Canadian/English/Latvian knows anything about bellydance? Girl, we got to hook you up!
Confession of the day: I once won a DISCO contest. Me and my boyfriend had MATCHING PERMS.
(Do you remeber the Seinfeld episode about Elaine's dance moves? Yikes - too close to home :))
Mainly the mirror is to help with the opposition - that is, of your arms. When you slowly wave your arms, they should be in opposition. It is the hardest thing of all to do without a mirror!

do you think i'm joking? i laughed on the outside, but i was crying on the inside.
i'd rather videotape myself doing anything, and i mean anything than to videotape myself dancing.
you swing your arms in opposition? i can't even swing my arms at all. barely move my feet. this is getting too personal. i'd like to watch and try at home, as long as no one (and i mean NO ONE)asked why i was there.

Yes! I'm an America (not middle eastern). I've been belly dancing for 4 years and I love it. Great exercise low impact and fun! I have a bad back and can still dance. What more would you like to know?
This is the end of the thread.
