Just wanted to post this for anyone in the NYC area who might be interested (it's handy working in the same building as the Strand):
Book:
Artificial Happiness by Dr. Ronald W. Dworkin
Date/Time:
September 12 07:00PM - 08:30PMEvent description:
One out of four Americans is on an antidepressant. Twenty percent of Americans use alternative medicine to relieve stress. Are we seeking a happiness independent of the facts of our lives? If so, what are the consequences? Dr. Dworkin will discuss this controversial issue with Father Richard John Neuhaus, one of the foremost authorities on religion in the contemporary world.Hmm ... I wonder if wearing a Karl Marx t-shirt (Mr. "Religion is the Opiate of the Masses") will win you points with either of the discussants?
Check out the Events calendar (http://www.strandbooks.com/calendar/#922) if you want. If you are in the area, want to go, and don't know where the Strand is, it's at Broadway and 12th Street. Once you get there, just ask and someone will tell you where the event is.

I think I may have to head downstairs and toss these guys a curveball on the topic. G-d in Hummels, they deserve each other!
Dworkin's an anesthesiologist, but having an M.D. gives you the authority to write about anything, as a good friend of mine once pointed out. You would think that someone in that field would understand the whole mind-body dichotomy is a fiction that isn't even all that useful anymore, but he approves morality education for kids as the cure for what ails our society -- from GPs overprescribing ADs to people seeking alternative therapies to some sort of "overexercise" culture. He essentially says that we pay lipservice to religion and moral character and look outside ourselves for salves for what ails us. I'm sure RJ Neuhaus' only gripes may be that Dworkin doesn't go far enough.
Yep, folks, it's true -- our ailments really are a fault of character, not chemistry.
So, maybe I will sit in and check out the morally-righteous lovefest this looks to be. I've got a couple of weeks to do some research and think up some good questions.

You go get 'em fine line!!
sounds from the tone of your post that these guys are much too simplistic, ah... if only it were so!
geez! people just love this "well straighten yourself up dammit!" kinda stuff
my superego is already beating the crap out of me thanks ;-)- I'm riddled with the burdens of morality (my own kind anyway).
good luck :-)

Well, it's time for "Doctor", Heal Thyself and "Father", Save Thyself. My genes know nothing about morality or "Original Sin" (even tho the Catholic Catechism has rejected it, having read some of his work it sounds like RJN didn't get the memo).
Sounds more moronistic to me.
Ach, they got me Irish up...
This is the end of the thread.
