I think you will all appreciate this.
My son is 17 (18 in 2 weeks) and leaving for college (in 2 weeks). He has been packing up his room. Today I found him amongst boxes looking very sad. I asked him what was wrong and he said he couldn't decide what books to take and what books to leave.
He said he knew he couldn't take them all but leaving them was like leaving old friends. So far in his box, amongst the dictionary and word origin books were "Ender's Game" and "A Wrinkle in Time". I'm guessing his "Lord of the Ring" collection will make it as will "Brave New World".
Poor Kid. But I totally get how he feels. Books are such a personal comfort, how do you choose? I told him I would keep the others safe and not give them away. My mother gave all mine away when I went off the college. I had the worst, purple, dog-eared copy of "Little Women" you've ever seen. I loved that book...and it was gone just like the others. Gee, I haven't thought about that book in 20 years. :(
Anyway, I told him he wasn't weird, there were lots of us who felt this way.

LOL, the first real book I ever owned was "Gentle Ben" and I was totally freaked when I couldn't find it after a move once. Just knowing it was around always somehow made me feel better. I know what you mean about them being like old friends.

Awww, that's so sweet. I have a torn up, really large book from my Grandmother, "Uncle Remus Stories". I can't remember the last time I opened it up and read about Brer' Rabbit, but I would be devastated if I didn't have it.

Yep, read that book and played the recording of Prokofiev's Peter and The Wolf narrated by Lorne Greene where all the characters are played by different instruments till they were both worn out. I'm amazed that the book still has it's cover. The other one I remember is the "Coles Funny Picture Book", sadly it was beyond saving and I actually cried. G*d I'm pathetic.

yes absolutely, I can still picture them, but they have been gone a long time
"The Brothers Grimm" (edited I believe for the sake of children)- I think I lost this one when I was sick and I threw up on it (EEWWWWW!! sorry that was gross!),
"The Dancing Man", "Stuart Little", "The Monster at the End of this Book"", and fairy tales by Hans Christian Andersen
Somewhere in my childhood I read a lot.
This is the end of the thread.
