I think you will all appreciate this.
My son is 17 (18 in 2 weeks) and leaving for college (in 2 weeks). He has been packing up his room. Today I found him amongst boxes looking very sad. I asked him what was wrong and he said he couldn't decide what books to take and what books to leave.
He said he knew he couldn't take them all but leaving them was like leaving old friends. So far in his box, amongst the dictionary and word origin books were "Ender's Game" and "A Wrinkle in Time". I'm guessing his "Lord of the Ring" collection will make it as will "Brave New World".
Poor Kid. But I totally get how he feels. Books are such a personal comfort, how do you choose? I told him I would keep the others safe and not give them away. My mother gave all mine away when I went off the college. I had the worst, purple, dog-eared copy of "Little Women" you've ever seen. I loved that book...and it was gone just like the others. Gee, I haven't thought about that book in 20 years. :(
Anyway, I told him he wasn't weird, there were lots of us who felt this way.
