Best movie from a book

Posted by Daisym on May 27, 2005, at 19:25:02

I tend to avoid movies that are made from the books I love. For example, I've never seen Little Women on film. Not any version, from any year. I don't want it to ruin the vision I have in my head of how they look.

I did watch the Lord of the Rings movies and I would say they are very well done. So much better than I thought they would be. I hated the Harry Potter movie and adore the books. I liked Life As a House as a movie almost as well as the book.

Anyone else? What have you hated? What have you loved?

My all-time favorite movie: Babette's Feast (from an Isaak Dinesen short story).

I enjoyed the movies, but not as much as the books. I felt like they were mostly produced for males. Way too long and high-tech battle scenes. And I was especially miffed that they didn't include the houses of healing scene in The Return of the King. And the way they changed the ending and the return of Arwen. But the locations (New Zealand wasn't it?) were fantastic, and I thought it was well cast and had cool costumes.

I, too, avoid movies made from books I love, but have seen one or two that were done well enough to satisfy me.

"Ethan Frome" comes to mind -- despite my first reaction to seeing Liam "Slurp" Neeson in the film. By the end of the movie, I was satisfied with his portrayal, and no longer thought he was overdoing it.

Another I thought quite good was "Of Mice And Men" -- although, when the front credits were rolling, my friend and I nearly turned it off when we saw how many times the name "Sinise" came rolling by... Since then, I have discovered that I nearly always like Gary Sinise, and the things he does tend to be quite good. (Although I do not watch CSI: New York. Just not worth it...)

Otherwise, mostly I sit there saying, "But that's not right! That didn't happen that way!" etc. The latest horror I've seen was "A Series of Unfortunate Events" which was an abomination! Yech!

At the moment, I *have* to say "Sin City".. OK, so its based on graphic novels, but its such an utterly superb translation.. it really keeps its graphic book feel.. visually about the most amazing film I have ever seen! Its very gruesome.. but I'm still in a wow state over it. I loved it SO much!

I did love Lord of the Rings.. I don't think it could have possibly been done any better. And Strider / Aragorn was even better than in my head *grins*

Having read the book several years before the movie...."The Hours" was quite good.

I'd just like to plug the double double quotes feature at this site:

http://www.dr-bob.org/babble/faq.html#amazon

The first time anyone refers to a book, movie, or music without using this option, I post this to try to make sure he or she at least knows about it. It's just an option, though, and doesn't *have* to be used. If people *choose* not to use it, I'd be interested why not, but I'd like that redirected to Psycho-Babble Administration:

Thanks!

Bob
