I',m presently reading this paperback,
which i picked up at a rummage sale on
account of its archaic title. It's turning
out to be a very good psychiatric thriller.
The author C. Carr has obviously studied
the history of psychology and it makes
his work very interesting indeed. There
was a give-away with the eyes because i have
read the same stuff - but i won;t let it out
here. For those who would like to read it
i should warn you, that it is a bit ghorry. There is another book of a totally different
genre that I keep running across on the net
on psychiatric self-help books: by David. D. Burns,
"Feeling Good" - i am wondering if anyone
has read this and what they think of it. It
looks like pop psych. by the man is a dr. and
a psychiatrist i think, so i may be wronging it.tx

I loved this book especially the historical portrait of New York. The psychology was entertaining too. It was a lot better than most of the mysteries I read. As I recall, I was less excited about the sequel "The Angel of Darkness" though I enjoyed it too.

Yes, I think Carr was very careful
to provide a "Jack the Ripper" kind of
atmosphere. I really like his research
into the turn of the century psychology
schools. I just knew he was going to
do the "eye" thing because we were so
excited by that experiment when I studied
Psychology.I've not finished it yet. I think it
would make an excellent film.Squiggles

Squiggles,

The latest one is at:

Hi, I do own the book. I bought it during one of my many self-help desperation moves since therapy and meds weren't working. The book didn't really hellp either. It was a good introduction for me before my pdoc recommended a CBT therapist. My problem with the therapy and the book, is that I feel like I am being tricked into thinking my thoughts are all screwed up and irrational. In some ways, I often felt like it was just like arguing with my husband and I would always lose to logic.
What I did like about the book -- it had a copy of the Beck Depression Inventory which I used to guage how bad off I might be during the inevitable downturns I am subject to. You should be able to find one of the old editions in second hand book stores. I haven't looked at the new edition which I think has a supplementary workbook.
I have the ALIENST somewhere in our house. It had seemed to be a very interesting book to read. I'll have to do more digging.
