Susan,

I think the recent Terkel book "Will the Circle Be Unbroken? Reflections on Death, Rebirth, and Hunger for a Faith" would more appropriate and timely than the Thompson stuff. I have never read anything from either of those two authors, but Terkel is well-known, and history/biography folks should like this.

I've not read either author. I'm up for anything so long as I have time to read it.

Another choice that could be considered would be the new book on bipolar disorder. It's called "Detour, My Bipolar Life in 4-D" by Lizzie Simon. All I know about the book is that the authoress is a 23 yr.old graduate of Columbia Univ. who was awarded a grant from Children's Mental Health Assn.(I think) to cross the US to meet and talk with bipolar individuals between the ags of 17-35. (What an incredible run on sentence!!!)

I still like Alexander and the Terrible Horrible No Good Very Bad Day. And there are two others in the series too. :)

That definitely makes life easier for me. Plus than I don't have to make a choice and that always saves me more grief than anyone would ever know.

I'll vote YES without the ballot - Primary day for us tomorrow how appropriate.

What happened to my nomination for Flannery o' connor? And the other suggestions before this thread? Voting in a 4 month block kind of leaves some of us out :( I know that's politics but geeez ...... We should rename it the Survivor book club. I liked some of the other earlier nominations too-in previous threads. It would be nice to have a little more choice. I feel all ganged up on :( Talk about a no good rotten day. Know it doesn't make any difference but thought I'd let you know.

I guess my post demonstrates my frustration with the process of selection...with all the great choices, (yours included) how do we choose? I would read them all, that is how indiscriminate i am...any suggestions as to how to 'herd cats' so we read the same book at the same time?

Yeah, I would like to read a Flannery O'Connor novel for sure. I forgot about that. Throw away my Hunter Thompson/Terkel suggestions and pop in any O'Connor novel instead (I have only read that *one* short story I mentioned). I like the idea of a mystical/colorful/fictional tale and that's great. It is way too close to 9-11 to read any journalism anyhow. Putting that stuff on the back-burner would be fine with me.

Hi,

I love Flannery O'Connor, but her novels are all really long and heavy. I enjoy her short stories so much more (and I normally don't like short stories). If we want a female southern writer, can I suggest Carson McCullers instead? Like _The Heart is a Lonely Hunter_?

Or we could pick a couple Flannery O 'Connor short stories.

Oh dear, I've just created even *more* options.

Has everyone read _The Color Purple_? That's a great book and a pretty quick read.

Another way to set up the voting? Comments?

What if we changed the system slighly. We could have a complete list of all books mentioned set up in Open for voting. We could make a rule that any book selected should have 50 or 75 % of the votes or whatever number seems to work best. When you go to polls in open you can see the results so far and you can change your own vote so that if no book had enough votes you either could change your vote to your favorite among the books with the most votes or you could come back here to try and convince everyone why they should change their choices. This way we should be able to get the book that is most acceptible to the most people. We could lobby here for the books we most wanted in an attempt to change other peoples minds. As each book was selected it would be removed from the list for next month and any new suggestions added to it.

Jane, the bookclub wallflower. :)

Tabitha,

More options is the solution. I saw that movie "The Heart is a Lonely Hunter" and it was fantastic. I like Southern writers a lot. "The Color Purple" is a great suggestion, too (liked that movie, too). Interesting, that you mentioned "long and heavy" describing O'Connor's novels. The only Hemingway I had read before this read was a short story of his and it was far more enjoyable than this novel. Maybe a compilation of short stories would be good. Does O'Connor have a popular compilation that would be a good option?

As I understand it, in order to vote you have to be registered at yahoo? I know a fair number of people prefer not to do this and so it would be an impediment to a high voter turnout. Isn't there a way to have full selection, while still keeping it on this board?

Dinah,

I tried to get into open one time and you have to go through all of these hoops and give them a bunch of info, so I didn't make it there. I don't mind others making the decision there, however. I'll read whatever they come up with-it really isn't important to me *how* it gets picked, or if others pick it. However, you bring up an interesting idea. I noticed that if you enclose a book title in quotes it becomes a blue hyper-link to Amazon. If there was a way to script a list of sorts that could be appended and could keep a running tally of votes... Something where you could "submit" a title to the list, and could change your vote, etc. I don't know if it could be set up or not?

Mitch, that hyperlink thing is something Dr. Bob does. Maybe he has an idea about how to vote on this site rather than on Yahoo. It's nice of you not to care how the book is chosen, but participation hasn't been all that high, and including more people in the decision making might help that problem.

In the past, it's been a two-stage process: (1) people nominate books (possibly ones that have been nominated before) and then (2) people vote by posting (with the title in the subject line makes it easiest to tally). It's kind of low-tech, but it's seemed to work...

I didn't participate earlier so I really think I should follow the crowd (somehow I feel very passively aggressive on this issue -- oh well)

Just please tell me soon. October is about seventeen days away, but who's counting?

Well MA, I personally see no problem in following the crowd, but there really doesn't seem to be a crowd, and we don't seem to be going anywhere in particular. (grin) It really would be a help if you and everyone voted, and made nominations for October. I think everyone was unclear on how Dr. Bob wanted the voting to be done, but now he's explained, we can get back on track.

Dinah

PS. Of course I'm not pressuring you. We just need enough votes to reach some sort of consensus.
