Has anyone tried this fruit? It's being touted as having as strong an anti-depressent effect as St. John's Wort only without the photosensitivity and contraindications. Plus it has a ridiculously high amount of natural Vitamin C amongst other healthful qualities. I've added it to my morning shake for the last two weeks and have to say that I do experience an almost immediate lift.

What kind of feeling do you get from it?Is it stimulant-like?
Is there any med or herb that it feels similar to?
Does it feel serotonergic?
Noradrenergic?
Dopaminergic?
GABAergic?Relaxing? Energizing? Both?
I noticed some botanist on the web ranks it as #2 on a list of plant antidepresants, and st johns wort didn't even make the list! So it must have some fairly good potential. I'm just curious as to how you would answer the above questions, so as to maybe get a hint of what kind of an antidepressant effect it has.
Thanks!

Not stimulant like, definitely serotonergic, like Prozac, actually, only very mild and subtle. I took too much today, though, and my head feels thickagain, much like I felt on Prozac. I took a tablespoon when, before, I got the best effect from a teaspoon or even half a teaspoon twice a day. It just made me feel a little sunshiney, with a slight shift in perspective. I didn't dwell as much. And I didn't get the irritation and unease the I get from Nora and Dopa stuff. I was all for it until taking too much! I'll try less tomorrow and see if I get the initial positive feeling. But, even having too much, I don't get a side-effect-type feeljust a little thick headed. No weird irritability or rebound depression/mixed feeling that I can get from herbs like ashwagandha or holy basil.

Well, I add it to my morning shake now, with spirulina, bee pollen, and hemp seed. It's a nice lift. I was taking it on its own for a while and I would get a sense of well-being within an hour or so, but after a week or so, I started to feel a little sad, perhaps "mixed." I'm not sure if this was the camu-camu, or me experimenting with different forms of magnesium at different times of the day, or just situational stuff. I also take empower plus, and have increased my dose from 3 to 4 capsules a day and am feeling fine.

I tried camu strictly as a vitamin C supplement not knowing it had a mood altering effect. With half a teaspoon I did seem to be "happier" but found I was only sleeping half the night. I would wake and not want to sleep anymore but then end up tired due to lack of sleep.
My point is we should consider this plant a herb, I think there is a naturally occurring drug in it. No one selling it mentions this.
I got this list of chemicals in camu fruit from Dr. Duke's Phytochemical and Ethnobotanical Databases. I'm not a chemist, anyone see any drug like chemicals in here? Dr Bob?

When do you take it? First thing in the morning? So many herbs that help me feel good during the day seem to affect my sleep at night in the same way you mention. I'll feel fine, bounding out of bed with energy, but will crash later in the day because I only got a half-night's sleep! I noticed a mile "brightening" when I took camu-camu, but not enough to have me continue it. I still have it, though, and take it when I feel a cold coming on.
This is the end of the thread.
