anxiety - and Taurine

Posted by jerryjohn on May 25, 2010, at 13:20:25

hello - anybody have any recent feedbacks on Taurine. I read some posts from back in 07 I think and So. Korea was having some great luck with it as an anti-anxiety amino. Being a vegan I was at first bummed out cause I thought the only source was the heart muscle, but a great supplement chain Bluebonnet has 500mg and 1000mg from the yucca plant, and my first try at 3 gr worked great. Hope it stays good, but from studying this darn overadrenaline issue for many years, the physical effects of fight or flight aren't good and have found help with Himalayans Stresscare and Baccopa, together they're great for me, also GABA and L-theanine, but its not consistant. Reading comments on this site confirms this is a body by body problem and different things work, other than a straight benzo, or alcohol.

I was on a benzo, Ativan, for many years. It was the only thing that helped my panic and social anxiety to a great degree, so much so that I felt wonderful whenever I took it. Eventually, I developed a tolerance to it. Today, I don't take Ativan anymore.
I have used Taurine on and off, but don't think I require it to control my anxiety. It's great to hear you found something that helps you. Taurine is actually very healthy for your brain and heart. I remember the herb Kava Kava helped me with my anxiety. I actually liked how it made me feel. However, it's not a wise idea to take it if you are taking antidepressants. But it did help me before I went on medication. The only thing I didn't like about the Kava Kava is that the effect would wear off in the middle of the day. So I thought, just take more later in the day. Well, this didn't work. I was taking Kava Kava for many months and it did a nice job. It didn't solve my social anxiety, however, but it did make my life a little more bearable. I don't know how to rate Kava Kava with Taurine because everyone responds differently to any one supplement. I know personally that Taurine can help with anxiety, much better than GABA supplements which I think are useless. I also had some success with using Glycine supplements, around 3 grams per day. It did help with anxiety, but I don't know if you'd like it or not. I think the Taurine is probably better. Glycine might help you, and I know that it has helped some people with schizophrenia. Thanks for posting. Good to hear something gives you some relief.

In reply to your message on Taurine. You didn't say what was eliminating your need for Taurine or ativan, as Taurine seems like the best thing going for general excess adrenaline. I've had my issue for so long now the only thing that really pushes me to have to rely totally on Taurine or anything really for anxiety is when there are stressors that trigger the past, and those stressors can be light stressors as it takes less stress to casue the overadrenaline flow. I wish I knew of a Dr. that has studied the adrenaline overflow as a generic problem, because there must be a solution.

In answer to your question, I eliminated ativan because my doctor didn't want me to have it anymore owing that it is addictive and I tried to commit suicide on it. I take Risperdal injections and Zoloft for anxiety. I don't have excessive adrenalin like you do. As far as memories triggering anxiety, yes I had that too quite a bit, but I think it had more to do with dopamine and/or serotonin problems than overproduction of adrenalin. And also, maybe lack of inhibitory processes as well because I am very sensitive to outside stimuli, such as loud noises. At least, that's the case for me.
Because I take medication, I don't really need taurine, but you say it helps you, that is good. Stay with it if it helps you. Taurine is a pretty safe supplement to take from what I know. Glycine is also an inhibitory supplement like Taurine. You might try that one too. It helped me in the past, but I can't take it now with my medication. Thanks for your reply.
