SAM-e trial

Posted by anony on December 28, 2004, at 0:02:41

I got QUEST brand SAM-e 200mg.
The label says One Tablet Contains: S-adenosyl-methionine 200mg (From 400mg of S-adenosyl-methionine-disulfate-tosylate). Is it 100% active SAM-e or only 50%?

I have been taken one tablet as soon as I wake up in the morning (on empty stomach) for 6 days.

The first day I took, I felt great. Anxiety was still there, but it did something to my depression. I felt a little dizzy and foggy. The second day, I had very similar effect as the first day. Since the third day to today, I'm not having such effect. It's giving me some muscle twitching, similar to SSRI's, but much less, i think.

What I also notice since the beginning of taking it is that my sleep-cycle is back. I'd rather say I sleep more than I used to. I also sleep really deep at night. However, it kind of makes me tired as well. Is this something that goes away?

Should I increase the dosage now?

I am sorry I do not know the answer to your questions but I did want to ask you , from what you know trying this med do you think it would make a good sleep med? I wanna ditch Ambein IF I can but hate to not sleep...I have had Trazadone, Benedryl, Atrax, and more poop out on me...any natural method like this would rock if I can sleep
Thanks ahead

Well I don't take it before I go to bed. I take it in the morning, and I think SAM-e is known not to take before you sleep. However, since takinig this, I sleep better at night. Anti-depressant effect is kind of gone now. I'm still waiting for reply to see if I have to up the dosage or not.

I have heard that Sam-e can be activating, so it is probably not a good idea to take it before bed.

What I have been taking for about a week now to help me sleep is the following: 500 mg of magnesium, 375 mcg of chromium and 500 mg of taurine. I don't have severe insomnia, but have spent many a night tossing and turning for hours. Most nights it does take me about 1 to 1.5 hours to fall asleep, and I was usually waking up a couple of times in the night. Since taking the mag/chrom/taur combo, I seem to fall asleep faster and stay asleep. I have also heard that 500 mg of niacinimide can be helpful.

I think the reason you haven't gotten a direct response to your question is because it's an unknowable response. No one can predict how any one person is going to react on an increased dosage. You have to do the experiment. I have taken SAM-e in dosages of 1200 mg. a day and I didn't have any of the symptoms you described. I didn't have any antidepressant response either though. SAM-e seems to elicit vary different responses in people. I would suggest that if you feel in your gut that you should stop the SAM-e, then do so but if the side effects are not that bad and you know that they may be temporary (and you've already paid out a lot of money to buy the stuff) then it may be worth trying out an increase and seeing what happens. You can always stop it at any time if the side effects get to be too much for you.
