What alternative meds should I take??

Posted by contemplative1 on November 6, 2003, at 10:36:09

I am new to this forum. It is hard to make heads or tails of what supplements help with what and in what amounts. However, there is no other single forum I am aware of where someone like me can get such valuable information.

I take Prozac 30Mg for depression and anxiety disorder. I have mild ADD but amphetamines turn me into a raging addict. I also take Ester C, E, Saw Palmetto and Milk Thistle.

I have Hepatits C so I have to be leary of meds that are difficult on the liver.

What should I take and how do I know it will not interfere with my existing regimen?

TIA

for sure add alpha lipoic acid for your liver (nm)

There is a suppliment formula that you might consider (that seems to me perfect for you~~) called "Vita Lipotropic" made by Eclectic Institute. It was recommended to me by a Natureopath, M.D.

I was taking Zoloft, have ADD, had depression and anxiety disorder, AND a compromised liver condition with all the precautions that your virus challenges you with.
It had/has an excellent effect. Made a huge difference in lowering my liver enzymes. It's even once taken me from a frightening yellow jaundice to remarkable 'blush of health' in days. Really helped with the depression, too.
i took it at the same time as my regular daily vites and medicines. i finished the first course of 120 tablets, and now only add it to my daily suppliments when my liver is compromised.

If you cannot find Vita Lipotropic, here is the formula:
(four tablets to be taken daily)

Vitamin B6 (Pyridoxine HCI) 30 mg
Magnesium (Oxide) 75 mg
Choline (Bitartrate) 225 mg
Inositol 600 mg
l-Methionine 900 mg
Dandelion Root, fresh freeze-dried
(Taraxacum officinale) 300 mg
Celandine Leaf, fresh freeze-dried
(Chelidonium majus) 150 mg
Beet Greens, fresh freeze-dried
(Beta vulgaris) 150 mg
Oregon Grape Root
(Mahonia aquifolium) 300 mg
Milk Thistle Seed
(Silybum marianum) 150 mg

This formula is not SO heavy on the Milk Thistle, because i was also drinking Milk Thistle Tea (Alvita- from TwinLabs) daily, but Silybum marianum is the most potent/best kind to be taking.
Wheat grass juice is excellent, too.

I will try this. This is exactly the information I was fishing for.

However, one question, if it helped with the depression, how come you ceased taking this elaborate concoction?

You are most welcome! Glad i could help :)

On the recommendation of my N.D, M.D. , after tests showed that my liver enzymes had reduced from 400 to 95 "high end of NORMAL". My anxiety and depression had lifted/smoothed out as my liver got healthier (amazing, eh?). According to traditional Chinese medicine, the liver has to do with internalized unresolved anger.

Vita Lipotropic is very potent and considered an alternative _medicine_, not a daily suppliment. My doc used this analogy: "Calling in the cavalry to return your life force to it's uncompromised strength and ability, but you wouldn't want all of them to move into your house permanently".
Also recommended was keeping a bottle of them (!)in my fridge to use as occasional support. Which i do, and have learned when i can take only two a day for a couple days, or go more or less.
Also, it's a little expensive. Inspires frugality ;)

Daily treatment for depression is best done with another combo of alternative suppliments. i think Larry Hoover or even DSCH (who also has ADD) can help out better here.
~~Guys?
But the Vita Lipotropic brought me to 'level' so we could gage how much depression/anxiety i needed to address daily. (much less than before!)

Wish you the best, contemplative1~
Keep us posted how you fare?

Escher recommended that you threw in your two cents and I would greatly appreciate that.

TIA

Actually, Ame sans vie would be the better one to ask....I'm not nearly so knowledgeable about the herbs.

The nutrient stuff seems to be targetted to oxidative stress, but it's incomplete in that regard. I'd have to take a closer look at the "package" than I have time to do right now. I'll get back to you later, 'kay?

Thank you Larry. I look forward to your input once you have time and I will solicit Ame Sans Vie's also.

Ame Sans Vie, would you be kind enough to go back to the follwoing thread and advise if this is the "best" concoction for me?
